The Good Wife 3.18 Review: "Gloves Come Off"

I enjoyed this episode for its steady, well-paced flow between a myriad of scenes. "The Good Wife" tends to do this on a regular basis, but here, there seemed to be a confidence emanating from the material that was particularly standout. The overall story may not draw much interest, as Lockhart and Associates argue first over a wrongful death lawsuit, then brain trauma from sports injuries, but there is enough on the fringes to compensate for that. There's so much happening in the space of an hour that it's hard to keep track.

“The River” turned out to be a show that was much better than it had any business being, given the questionable nature of the production style and the pedigree of the production staff. When the story was less about vague supernatural threats, and more about the characters, it improved tremendously. There was never any doubt that Hershel's farm would eventually fall to an outside threat, but it was a bit of a surprise that that outside threat ended up being the Walkers. For a while there, I had started to fully expect that Randall's group would be the ones to descend on the farm. In some ways, that might have been more interesting. But I suppose the zombie threat has been a bit underplayed this season, so it makes sense to bring them back in full force to cap off the season.

Talk about bad timing. Sally’s possession by her own Reaper persona takes place at the worst possible time, as Josh is about to turn during the full moon and Aidan needs a fix of human blood. For Sally’s part, she has fallen into that beloved trope of an internal fantasy world, as the Reaper personality seeks to keep her Sally personality happy and distracted.

The formula of "Lost Girl" is starting to show the tell-tale signs of wear and tear around the edges, in that way most shows do by the time they hit double digits. Nonetheless, the writers are still good at breathing life into things and there's plenty of character and mythology ground to be covered, as "The Mourning After" demonstrates aptly by following up on the most intriguing threads of previous stories.

If not for the emotional components that hooked viewers, this latest episode of "Awake" would be a little ordinary. I mean, I understand giving a backstory for Michael to connect to Rex's abduction, but the resolution is too obvious. With Dean still not sure where his mind is at, and Sam dealing with a very chatty and empowered Lucifer in his head, I suppose that it was the perfect time to revisit the Leviathans and Dick Roman’s plans for the human race. “Spartacus” is usually that kind of series that delivers unexpected reversals of fortune, to the point where it becomes almost impossible to imagine that much of an episode would be devoted to a plot device that is so overused as to be laughable. So it’s surprising that the writers would go with something like a “Trojan Horse” scenario, even if they did try to frame it in a way that illuminates Glaber’s character.

Week twelve brought us a landmark chapter of The Walking Dead, as the season’s slow build paid off with a truly game-changing episode. Rick and Shane finally brought their love-hate relationship to a resolution, and Shane’s death brought undeniable proof that the zombie infection is not passed by the walkers.
From the opening scene to the stunning climax, almost everything about “Better Angels” was right on. The tone of the episode was infused with a real sense of foreboding. The sudden cold weather, the grimness and depression, preparations for winter, it all created an undercurrent of threat that built to a stunning climax. Even Dale’s funeral had an air of danger. I loved the way Rick’s talk of humanity was juxtaposed against shots of the smaller group hunting walkers, not just beheading but beating and stomping them to death. It was personal, violent and showed how angry they are at losing Dale. But few viewers missed the irony of Rick’s voiceover about honoring Dale. I’m not sure this group is capable of taking Dale’s message to heart.

Merlin 4.11: "The Hunter's Heart"

"The Hunter's Heart" is a fairly good representation of "Merlin's" typical approach to blending an episodic story with the needs of an over-arching story, with the larger story taking a slightly heavier priority in this season than in any previous one. Most of the time, I've felt that the episodic storytelling detracts from the show's attempts to tell a serialized story, and that the connection between the two story layers was disappointingly thin. But at least in this case, the merger of the two stories feels relatively organic.
