SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive Video Interview: Now & Then Creative Team on Shooting Two Timelines, Working in Miami

Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira, and Gideon RaffNow & Then, the new mystery series from Apple TV+, has a pretty straightforward setup: a group of college friends find their lives are forever changed when a graduation party ends in tragedy. Twenty years later, the remaining five are reluctantly reunited when someone threatens to expose their secrets.

What’s exciting about this production is the study in contrasts: the action is set in 2000 and 2020, with two sets of actors playing the same characters, dialogue in both Spanish and English, and major plot twists that you won’t see coming.

The creative team describes the story as taking place in two timelines: pre-accident and post-accident. For director Gideon Raff (The Spy, Homeland), who helmed the first two episodes, that meant “giving this story a visual language and telling the story emotionally with the camera.” To create that language, Raff used a range of approaches and technologies.

Exclusive: Fear the Walking Dead's Colby Hollman

***The following interview contains major spoilers for 7.14***

Colby HollmanOn tonight’s all-new episode of Fear the Walking Dead, things came to a head when Strand (Colman Domingo) brought Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), who was ready to fight, into the tower to talk. However, when Alicia made him aware that she was dying, he changed his plans and agreed to work with her. Wes, played by Colby Hollman, who recently left Luciana (Danay Garcia) to come to the tower after she lied, had stood by Strand and was not happy with his decision and turned against the two of them. In the end of the episode, Strand stabs and kills Wes, not wanting Alicia to have to do it.

Hollman knew since they started filming the back half of the season that Wes was a goner. “What Ian [Goldberg] and Andrew [Chambliss] would do,” explained the actor to SciFi Vision during a recent exclusive, “is [with] every one of us, they’d give us a call before we started filming, and they’d tell us the arc of our character episode by episode, what was going to be happening…So, I was prepared for it.”

The actor feels that they honored Wes with the death. “I feel like this was just kind of his time to go. He really had nothing else to live for. He came off killing his brother and then [being] betrayed by somebody that he loved so dearly in Luciana, and [he was] not seeing Alicia anymore…So, it's kind of like, ‘what else does he have to live for?’…So, the ending of the tower, it seems to be right that it is also the ending for Wes.”

Exclusive Video Interview: K.D. Dávila and Carey Williams on Creating Emergency, Now in Theaters

Carey Williams and K.D. DávilaToday, Emergency comes to theaters. The film, written by K.D. Dávila and directed by Carey Williams, tells the funny but also emotional story of a group of college students, who during a night of partying, find an unconscious girl in their living room and must decide whether or not calling someone could make the situation worse for them.

The idea for the film, actually came from real life events, according to the writer. “The story is loosely inspired by stuff that has happened, actually, to several friends of mine,” Dávila told SciFi Vision during a recent interview, “having kind of a Goldilocks and the Three Bears moment of finding an unconscious white woman in your house who was intoxicated and having to figure out, ‘what do I do?’ I think that this is a situation where we wanted to make a movie that was about that phenomenon where people of color in America have a burden of having to think about how you're being perceived at all times.

Interview: Rosie Perez & Žjelko Ivanek Star in New Apple TV+ Thriller Now & Then

***The following interview contains slight spoilers***

Rosie Perez and Žjelko IvanekAppleTV+ has a new crime series out today! Now & Then tells the story of five college friends whose lives are forever changed after a night of partying ends in tragedy. Twenty years later, they are reluctantly reunited by a threat that puts their seemingly perfect lives at risk. While the eight episodes center around a mysterious death, the story is really about youthful dreams and the reality of adulthood.

Set in Miami and shot mostly in Spanish, the series stars Rosie Perez (The Flight Attendant) and Zjelko Ivanek (12 Monkeys) as the lead detectives on a twenty-year-old case. Now & Then also features an exciting cast of international stars as the five friends still reeling from the bad decision they made  years ago: Marina de Tavira (Roma), José María Yazpik, Maribel Verdú, Manolo Cardona, and Soledad Villamil.  Together, these seven talented actors have dozens of award nominations and wins, far too many to mention here.

Perez and Ivanek are the only two actors who play themselves in both time periods. In 2000, Perez’s detective Flora Neruda is a rookie investigating a car crash with her partner, Ivanek’s older and more jaded John Sullivan. In 2020, that case still haunts Flora until a phone call brings all the players back together.

Exclusive Video Interview: Winner of American Song Contest AleXa

AleXaLast Monday, the first season of American Song Contest came to a close with the announcement of the winner of the competition, AleXa, representative of Oklahoma, for her song “Wonderland.”

According to AleXa, who spoke with SciFi Vision recently, the song is a metaphor. “It’s basically kind of a metaphor for when you break free of that fantasy whenever someone is leading you on, and you're viewing them through these rose-tinted glasses, but then you realize, ‘Oh, no way; you're deceiving me. It's not healthy for me; let me escape it.’ So, we kind of wanted to represent that through the ropes that we use on stage as breaking free of things. But then also metaphorically, as we all know, [in] the story of Alice in Wonderland, the White Rabbit leads her through her journey of Wonderland, all these challenges and everything.”

Exclusive Interview: Why Didn't They Ask Evans' Amy Nuttall

Amy NuttallWritten and directed by Hugh Laurie, Britbox’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, based on the Agatha Christie story, tells the tale of events that unfold after a dying man’s last words to vicar’s son Bobby Jones (Will Poulter) cause him to go on a crime-solving adventure with Lady Frankie Derwent (Lucy Boynton). During their quest, Frankie fakes a car crash on the property of wealthy Englishman Henry Bassington-ffrench (Miles Jupp) and his American wife, Sylvia, played by Amy Nuttall, who recently spoke to SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about working on the series. The actress hadn’t heard of the story before getting the role but knew right away that she wanted to be a part of the series. “I think I can speak for most actors that if you get a call about being in an Agatha Christie, you want to be involved whatever the part is,” said Nuttall. “Added to this, Hugh Laurie was at the helm! Hugh adapted it, directed, and also starred in it. What else is there to say?”

Being a period piece, the costume was very important to Nuttall when creating the character. “We chose warm colors as it was important that she came across as gentle, warm, approachable, and sometimes fragile,” explained the actress. “How you feel before you even open your mouth on a set is very important. Costumes play a massive part in helping you get in to character.”

Interview: Steven Moffat & David Nutter on Bringing The Time Traveler's Wife to Life

Steven Moffat and David NutterThe Time Traveler’s Wife, which is based on the novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger, premieres today on HBO and HBO Max. The series follows the love story of Henry (Theo James) and Claire (Rose Leslie) and their subsequent marriage. However, they have the unique problem that Henry is an unwitting time traveler.

Dealing with time travel, the story bounces back and forth between Claire meeting Henry at different ages, out of order, as she grows up. Executive producer and writer of the series Steven Moffat has some experience telling stories out of time, having been the showrunner on Doctor Who. “I don't think out of sequence is as difficult as people think it is,” he explained to SciFi Vision during a recent roundtable. “I think our memories work like that anyway. I mean, the story of your life is stored in your head. You know the story of your own life. Is it in sequence? If you think about your life, do you think of day one, day two, day three? No, you face a whole jumble of events that are ordered by priority or interest that are linked together, because they're about the same thing or happened in the same place. The story of your own life is nonlinear. Your life is linear, but the story of it is a mess, and, frankly, it would take you days to try and work out in what order anything happened…So, in a way, stories are like memories. There's a chaos of events, and the links between those events are about the subject or emotional or their context.”

Exclusive: Fear the Walking Dead’s Keith Carradine & Omid Abtahi

***The following interview contains spoilers for 7.12***

Keith Carradine & Omid AbtahiOn AMC’s most recent episode of Fear the Walking Dead, in order to get Strand (Colman Domingo)’s ear, John Dorie Sr. (Keith Carradine) planted a walkie on Howard (Omid Abtahi), Strand’s right hand man. Towards the end of the episode, although Strand knew the truth, he tasked Dorie with throwing Howard off the roof, and he complied, hoping that earning Strand’s favor would protect Baby Mo. However, in the end, knowing that Strand wouldn’t change, Dorie knocked him out and took Mo to Morgan (Lennie James), getting bit by a walker in the process.

Carradine, who found out before filming the back half of season seven about his character’s demise, recently talked to SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about Dorie’s motivations in the episode. “John had one over overriding concern, which was Mo and what is going to be best for that child,” explained Carradine. “I think that he could have gone either way, in terms of which side he came down on, in terms of who he was going to work with and cooperate with, as long as the end result was going to be the survival of that child under the best possible circumstances. So, I think that as he was dealing with Strand and Strand’s paranoia and obvious, complete unpredictability about how he might respond to any given situation. I think that he simply took every moment as it came and would make decisions in that time as to whether that was going to lead to him being able to do the best thing for the child. Then, finally, as you saw in the episode, when push came to shove, he had to make the choice that he made.”
