"Snow White and the Huntsman:" Visually Stunning

Snow White and the HuntsmanSnow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron, comes to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday.

The film follows Snow White (Stewart), who after her mother has died and Evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) has married and killed her father, is put in a cell and left in the dungeon. As in the original Snow White tale, the queen asks the mirror (Christopher Obi) who is the fairest, and as Snow White is now of age, he says that Snow White is now the fairest. The mirror also tells her that Snow White is the key to her immortality, so the queen sends for her to be killed, and once she escapes the castle, sends the Huntsman (Hemsworth) after her.

Before I go into reviewing the storyline of the film I want to start with the look, because for me, that's what I will remember most. Visually the film was absolutely breathtaking in many of the scenes. From the grand sets of the castle and the Dark Forest, to the visual effects of the fairies, to the animation of the "obsidian shards," it really was a beautiful film.

The actor recently talked to me in person for an exclusive interview for SciFi Vision to talk about his career.

Total Recall: Missing Mars

Total Recall PosterIt is impossible to talk about a remake without talking about the movie that it came from. For those unfamiliar, Total Recall was an Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick from the 90’s about a man who goes through a recreational mind-altering procedure and supposedly discovers that he’s really a spy. The original film left a question mark on that summary, never definitively stating what was reality. It was a good action flick for the time, had some creative ideas and thoughtful themes behind an otherwise 90’s action flick. If you liked Arnold’s other movies of the time, it was a must watch.

Abraham Lincoln: Not One for the Ages, But One for the Weekend

By Daniel Denehy

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterSurprisingly I don't actually have a lot to say about this one. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is certainly a unique book concept, but as a movie simply an exercise in the melodramatic. Rather, I should say a glorious exercise in the melodramatic. As another tid-bit of background about your reviewer, I love melodramas. I find them supremely entertaining, and even sometimes moving. This melodrama leads more towards the prior.

"Decoy Bride" - DVD/Blu-Ray Review

By Jamie Ruby

Decoy BrideKatie (Kelly MacDonald), the only single woman left on the small Scottish island of Hegg, lives a boring life with her sick mother. All that changes when the island is visited by famous movie star Lara Tyler (Alice Eve) and British author James Arber (David Tennant), as they come to the remote location after their first wedding attempt was botched by the paparazzi. The island was chosen because James previously described the castle where they would be married and the island in his novel - in gross exaggeration. Lara's assistants work feverishly to transform an entire castle to be perfect for the bride, as well as take precautions to keep the press at bay.

When it's apparent that the press cannot be so easily swayed, the assistants decide to find a decoy bride.

"Some Guy Who Kills People" - DVD Review

Some Guy Who Kills PeopleWhen I first received the DVD to review, I wasn't sure what to think with it's title, but don't let that deter you. In retrospect, the title actually fits the mood of the film.

Some Guy Who Kills People
is partially a horror movie - it does have murder and blood and guts - but it's also a great character driven story. The star of the film is Kevin Corrigan, who plays the character of Ken Boyd. Boyd is 34 and still living at home with his mother (Karen Black), working as an ice cream parlor attendant. Boyd is very quiet and withdrawn - he's returned from a mental institution after severe mental trauma from being beaten and tortured by a group of high school kids. He releases tension by his comic art, where he can live out his dark fantasies of revenge.
