From writer and director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), the science fiction film Elysium comes to 4k Ultra HD. The film stars Matt Damon as Max, who grew up on the slums of an overpopulated Earth with his friend Frey (Alice Braga), dreaming of the luxurious lifestyle of those on Elysium. Secretary Delacourt (Jody Foster) will do anything in her power to keep those of Earth away from Elysium, but that doesn’t stop them from trying. After a life-threatening accident at work, Max is willing to do what it takes to make his way to Elysium to be cured. Agreeing to steal information from John Carlyle (William Fichtner), Max is outfitted with body mods and an exoskeleton by Spider (Wagner Moura) and sent on a deadly mission pitting him against the rogue Agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley). He gets more than he bargained for when he receives information that could bring equality to the two worlds.

I very much enjoyed Elysium. The story of the movie is relatable to the world today, featuring social commentary on issues such as social class division, health care, and more, yet is not patronizing. It’s also, just in general, a really fun sci-fi movie with a good script.

The film also looks fantastic, from the sets to the special effects. There is so much detail in everything, and the worlds of Elysium and future LA are really believable and make you feel like you are there. Blomkamp really knows his world building, and everything just fits together perfectly.

Tonight season two of A Discovery of Witches, based on novels of the same name by Deborah Harkness, premieres on Sundance Now and Shutter. The new season picks up where the last left off: Diana (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew (Matthew Goode) have timewalked in order to hide from Gerbert (Trevor Eve) and Knox (Owen Teale) somewhere in time. They arrive in 1590 Elizabethan London where they continue to search for The Book of Life while also trying to find Diana a powerful witch willing to teach her how to control her magic.

While Diana struggles to control her powers, Matthew must enter his old dangerous life as spy Matthew Roydon, while not losing himself to his darker past. Can Diana accept his darkest secrets, and can Matthew control his jealousy and reawakened rage?

The limited series, The Third Day, premiered Monday on HBO. The first arc of three episodes, “Summer,” follows Jude Law as Sam. After being drawn to the mysterious island of Osea, Sam saves a girl (Jessie Ross)’s life which leads him down a path that will change everything when he meets a group of mysterious islanders with secret rituals and their own traditions and religion. With the island separated by a causeway from the mainland, Sam is unable to leave until the tides are down. The longer he stays, the more entwined he becomes and learns that there may be connections to his past that will force him to deal with painful memories and loss. As reality starts to blur, his quest will lead him to a shocking discovery.

After “Summer,” a live theatrical event will be broadcast online, following a single day in real time. The episode will be filmed in one continuous take. This will bring viewers deeper into the mystery.

Lucifer - 5.02 - "Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!"

An astronaut (Ashlei Tave) opens a sealed room in what looks to be some kind of spaceship. She sneaks with a knife over to one of the sleeping passengers and uses it to break open their lockbox. She pulls an apple out and starts to eat it, when suddenly another astronaut comes from behind and stabs her.

Chloe (Lauren German) looks for Lucifer (Tom Ellis), letting a still annoyed Ella (Aimee Garcia) realize he’s back.

Meanwhile, the doppelgänger (Ellis) practices Lucifer’s accent and talking to Chloe while naked in front of his mirror.

Chloe and Ella investigate the murder of Judy Mason, a biochemist and commander of the Red 2 Mars project, a simulation engineered by Brody Aerospace, run by Anders Brody (Stephen Schneider), the tech billionaire, who Chloe says she talked to last year on a boat. Ella says that now he has a spaceship and was planning to take rich civilians to the red planet to be the first Mars colony. Judy, who was the only scientist, was stabbed in the neck. They find a hair in a bloody footprint, but the killer must have cleaned, because none of the suits had blood on them. Since no one is allowed in or out of the dome, they assume killer has to be one of the five crew. Most of the camera footage has been wiped.

Lucifer - 5.01 - "Really Sad Devil Guy"

The episode opens with Mr. Said Out Bitch (Jeremiah Birkett) on his yacht partying when he’s propositioned by one of the women. He goes below deck to get into something more comfortable, but instead he finds Lucifer (Tom Ellis), who reveals he’s in Hell and tells him he’s going to be murdered.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the team is investigating the murder. Mr. Said Out Bitch’s real name is Lee Garner. He’s been shot in the chest and is missing a hand.

Chloe (Lauren German) has brought Maze (Lesley Ann-Brandt) to the crime scene in lieu of Lucifer. Ella (Amy Garcia) is upset that Lucifer ghosted her, thinking he’s in Florida helping with his family business. Chloe is upset that he's still gone but says she’s fine.

On Friday, Netflix drops the first eight episodes of season five of the fan favorite, Lucifer, with all the main cast returning.

Based on the character created by Neil Gaiman for the Sandman series, the show follows Lucifer Morningstar, played by Tom Ellis, a fallen angel, who in defiance of his father, abandons his throne in Hell for LA where he owns a nightclub, Lux. After an acquaintance is murdered, Lucifer finds himself in the presence of Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), and he eventually becomes her partner as a consultant for the LAPD, where they battle angelic, demonic, and even human threats.

Over the course of the series, Chloe discovers that Lucifer is actually the devil. At the end of season four, she accepts Lucifer and admits to him that she loves him, making him realize that it was she who was his first true love and that the prophecy will come to pass, unleashing evil on the Earth. After a kiss, Lucifer leaves to send the demons back and once again rule over Hell.

I'll tell you up-front that I've been a Star Wars fan ever since I was sixteen when the first movie came out. I was already a Trekkie and sci-fi fan, so I was just mesmerized by the original Star Wars and its colorful universe. You can't underestimate the effect that movie had on many of us. Good sci-fi films and TV shows were relatively rare back then, and special effects were pretty bad. When George Lucas made the first Star Wars movie, he not only created a completely original universe full of unusual aliens, planets, handsome heroes, and butt-kicking heroines, but he actually created new cameras and other techniques still used in film today. His vision was the most important factor driving the films. When Empire Strikes Back came out three years later, it was not only a great sequel but an even better movie.

Riverdale Avenue Books has recently started a new line of books on television and movies, with the first one in the series being The Bingewatcher’s Guide to Doctor Who by Mackenzie Flohr. With Doctor Who being my favorite show currently on television and given the fact that the twelfth season just finished airing, I was really excited to receive the book for review.

The book focuses mostly on season eleven, but it works well as a recap, and it has a lot of other information in it.

The book is divided into a bunch of different sections. The beginning gives a history on how the series came to be and evolve, as well as how the author became an fan and how it inspired her. It also talks about how Chris Chibnall changed the series, including of course, the introduction of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor.

Based on the novel of the same name by Joe Hill, NOS4A2 returns to AMC June 21 with all new episodes. The series follows Vic McQueen, played by Ashleigh Cummings, a young woman with the supernatural ability to travel anywhere and find lost things.

In the first season, when immortal Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto), who steals children’s souls, lures a child into his Rolls-Royce Wraith to take him to Christmasland, a magical place where everyday is the holiday, Vic uses her abilities to go after him and the other kidnapped children.

Eventually, Vic kills Manx by lighting the Wraith, which keeps him alive, on fire. She is saved by Lou Carmody (Jonathan Langdon), who takes her to the hospital where she finds out she is pregnant.

Emma. is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s comedic nineteenth-century tale of love, matchmaking, and moving beyond the stigma of social classes.

The story takes place in Regency-era England and follows Emma Woodhouse, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, a rich, privileged, and pretentious girl who is entering adulthood. Revered by the town and wanting for nothing, Emma thinks herself quite the matchmaker when her governess, Miss Taylor (Gemma Whelan), marries the man she introduced to her, Mr. Weston (Rupert Graves). Taking a girl, Harriet (Mia Goth), with uncertain parentage under her wing and ignoring the advice of her brother-in-law Mr. Knightley (Johnny Flynn) who she has known for years, she decides to match her up with the local vicar, Mr. Elton (Josh O’Connor), and persuades her to refuse a marriage proposal from farmer Robert Martin (Connor Swindells). Mr. Elton, however, would never marry someone so below his social status and instead proposes to an oblivious Emma.

Emma may believe she doesn’t need a man for herself, but that doesn’t stop her from flirting with Frank Churchill (Callum Turner), Mr. Weston’s son, who seems to favor her, regardless of Mr. Knightley’s warnings.
