Directed by Jordan Scott, daughter of the famed Ridley Scott, who also serves as a producer on the film, A Sacrifice, which opened in theaters yesterday, follows American social psychologist Ben Monroe (Eric Bana) who is investigating a disturbing cult in Berlin when his rebellious teenage daughter, Mazzy (Sadie Sink) comes to stay with him. She meets a local boy, Marting (Jonas Dassler), who introduces her to the underground party scene and she starts making questionable choices. As their two worlds are about to collide, Ben must race against time to save his daughter.

According to Scott, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, the book on which the film is based, Tokyo, by Nicholas Hoggs, was more about the relationships between characters than it was about the cult. “The original book was focused much more on this amazing father-daughter story and also the love story between Ben and [the character] who is now Nina (Sylvia Hoeks),” explained the director to SciFi Vision during a recent interview. “But there was this underlying hint of this nefarious cult throughout that sort of kept poking its head above the parapet, but we never really went into the cult or into their world. Then, right as the book ended, the cult kind of opened up…So, I really focused on creating the cult and Hilma (Sophie Rois)’s world and having those two stories intersect.”

Directed by Gil Kenan with a script he co-wrote with Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the fifth film in the franchise and set three years after the events in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The film follows the Spengler family as they return to where it all started at the firehouse in New York City, now that a very rich Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) is funding the team and has even created a top-secret state of the art lab. Not everyone is happy with their new location, however, as the mayor (William Atherton) uses every excuse to try to shut them down, which ends with the youngest member of the family, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), benched, as her brother, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), her mother, Callie (Carrie Coon), and Callie’s partner, Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), continue to protect the city without her. While sidelined, Phoebe befriends a ghost, Melody (Emily Alyn Lind), who may not be who she seems. Meanwhile, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) comes across an ancient artifact that unleashes a new foe who wants to open a doorway to the other side to create his own spectral army. Ghostbusters new and old will have to work together to save the world from the evil Garraka and prevent a second Ice Age.

In addition to those mentioned above, Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim return from Afterlife, and Bill Murray and Annie Potts reprise their roles from earlier films. Also joining the cast are Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt.

Frozen Empire is an enjoyable adventure that’s fun for the whole family. It’s funny yet also maintains an exciting story that’s full of thrilling twists and turns and also has heart.

Sight, which opens in theaters today and stars Terry Chen and Greg Kinnear, is based on the inspiring true story of Dr. Ming Wang (Chen), a poor Chinese immigrant who flees Communist China and grows up to be a world-renowned eye surgeon in America. The story starts in 1970s China, where a young Ming faces many hardships, including living through the violent uprising, the Cultural Revolution, but with the support of his family, as well as his own determination, he is able to go to America on a scholarship where he attends Harvard and MIT. Eventually, he helps create a technology that would be used to restore sight to millions of people. Through the story, he takes on the impossible task of helping an orphan blinded by her stepmother. He must not only face the traumas of his past, but will also learn that determination and will can only take you so far.

Today Madame Web was released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The Marvel heroine origin story follows Cassandra Web (Dakota Johnson), a paramedic in Manhattan, who after a brush with death discovers she has clairvoyant abilities and must face revelations from her past. Saving three young women, Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Anya (Isabela Merced), and Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), who are destined to become heroines of their own, Cassandra uses her power to see the future to try to alter their fates, protecting them from a deadly adversary (Tahar Rahim) who has powers of his own.

It was nice to see a Marvel superhero film led by female heroines, and I appreciated the exploration of Cassandra’s powers, especially since they were mental abilities rather than physical ones. The filmmakers did a good job of showing visually how she could see the different possible future timelines and would alter them. I also enjoyed how the story was split between three different timelines and how it was told. Overall, the script was well written and kept me engaged throughout.

The visuals were also excellent, as to be expected from such a film, and it had many exciting special effects and action sequences. There was also a good bit of web imagery in cracks in glass and things which I thought helped to tie everything together. I also was pleased with the costumes the four women wore in the future, even if the glimpses were brief, but I think more than that might have been too much.

Last weekend, the film, Wicked Little Letters, opened nationwide. The movie, based on a true story, takes places in the 1920s in the seaside town of Little Hampton and stars Olivia Coleman as the very conservative Edith Swan and Jessie Buckley as the loud Irish migrant Rose Gooding. When Edith and the others in the town start receiving anonymous wicked little letters filled with vulgarities, it causes an uproar and Rose is charged with the crime. However, Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) doesn’t believe her to be the true culprit, and she and the other townswomen decide to find out the truth. 

Recently, actress Vasan spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the film, including her preparation for the character, how the costume was an important part of it, and working with Olivia Coleman. 

Based on the book Mustang Miracle by Humberto G. Garcia, which is based on a true story, The Long Game tells the story of J.B. Peña (Jay Hernandez), who in 1956 moved with his wife (Jaina Lee Ortiz) to Del Rio, Texas for a job as the superintendent of the school, but also because he dreamed of becoming a member of the all-white Del Rio Country Club. He is devastated when he’s denied entry because of his skin color, but when he meets a group of young Mexican-American golf caddies working at the club who have built their own course to teach themselves the sport, he is inspired. He convinces them to start a team for their high school, and eventually, despite having inferior equipment, they go on to compete against other affluent all-white teams and eventually win the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship, which broke barriers for Latino PGA golfers that followed. The film also stars Dennis Quaid, Cheech Marin, Julian Works, Brett Cullen, Oscar Nuñez, Richard Robichaux, and Paulina Chávez.

Recently, SciFi Vision spoke with stars Works, Chávez, and Cullen, as well as writer and director Julio Quintana, about the film, which is playing in theaters nationwide, starting tomorrow.

Directed by Thea Sharrock, Wicked Little Letters, which is based on a stranger than fiction story, takes place in a 1920s English seaside town that is rocked by scandal. The film follows two neighbors, conservative Edith Swan, played by Olivia Coleman, and the foul-mouthed Irish migrant, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and others in the town receive wickedly insulting letters full of profanity, Rose is accused and charged. However, as she awaits trial, as the women of the town, led by female Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), try to find the truth, they find that things may not be what they seem.

Recently, star Coleman spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the hilarious film, where the actress talked about giggling on set as well as playing both the comedic and serious parts. “I love humor that's delivered with a straight face,” Coleman told the site. “[I] love it when the character is trying to show something, but what's coming out makes it funny. I love those juxtapositions…It's more fun, I think, to try and play more than one thing at once.”

Although the film takes place in the 1920s, it feels very relevant to today with anonymous trolling on the internet, and during the paired interview, director Sharrock talked about the human need to hurt someone. “[I]t's quite interesting to reflect on how far we've come in 100 years, and how, in some ways, it feels like we haven't learned much at all,” said the director. “…We go through moments [with] actually almost needing to hurt somebody else. It’s like, there is a need. What I'm interested in is where that need comes from, what is that about in somebody that it brings that out in them?”

Ben and Mei, inseparable best friends, have reached their limit with Mrs. Wheeler and her harsh teaching methods. She's threatened to fail everyone unless the suspected cheater confesses, causing frustration to boil over. In response, Mei hatches a plan to set up Mrs. Wheeler for a crime she didn't commit: the murder of a former West Greenview High School student.

Their scheme unfolds in The Prank, a comedy/horror indie film that hit theaters on March 15th. This long-awaited release had its world premiere at SXSW in 2022 and boasts a star-studded cast including the iconic Rita Moreno, along with Connor Kalopsis, Ramona Young, Kate Flannery, and Keith David.

In the film The Neon Highway, which is now in select theaters, singer/songwriter Wayne Collins (Rob Mayes) was about to make it in Nashville when a car crash put an end to his dream. Seven years later, working as an electrician in Georgia, he meets Claude Allen (Beau Bridges), a washed up country music legend. After playing his original song for Allen, the two return to Nashville hoping to score a record deal, but things the industry has changed since Allen was last there, and no one is not interested. They are out of luck unless Wayne can find a way to outsmart the system and get the song released. 

Last week, stars Bridges and Mayes spoke with SciFi Vision about their work on the film, including why it spoke to them, what it was like singing live for the movie, what they’ve learned about themselves, what it was like for Bridges working with his son Ezekiel in the film, and more. 

Recently, the film Cabrini was released in theaters. The biopic comes from director Alejandro Monteverde and tells the story of one of most influential people of the 20th century, Francesca Cabrini. The film follows Italian immigrant Cabrini (Cristiana Dell’Anna), who after demanding an audience with the Pope himself (Giancarlo Giannini), moves with her group of nuns to the slums of New York City and makes it her mission to help society’s most vulnerable and ends up creating an empire of hope unlike anything before.

The director and Dell’Anna, as well as David Morse, who stars as Archbishop Corrigan, recently spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the film.
