***The following is a detailed recap of episode 407 of FROM, “Best Laid Plans,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

Randall has been trying the door in Colony House basement but hasn’t had luck opening it. Jade tells him if it’s sealed, it’s probably for the best and then hangs a talisman on it “just in case.”

Boyd and Kenny are looking for Henry in Colony House when he stumbles in. Kenny questions it’s the best time to tell him since he’s drunk, but Boyd says he doesn’t have a choice. Boyd takes Henry upstairs so he can talk to him. He tells him Victor is fine, but there is something he needs to tell everyone but he and Victor needs to hear it first. Henry stumbles but won’t accept help.

Tabitha is on the floor in the bedroom with Jim’s clothes when Ethan comes in. He tells her that sometimes he likes to look at his stuff too and adds that Julie is home. She tells them they will go talk.

Tabitha and Ethan tell Julie about the dolls and the totem. Julie asks how she knew the totem would work. Tabitha says that she remembered. She needs to tell them something that has been hard for her to understand and believe: that she has been there before many times all the way back to the beginning. The last time she was there she was Miranda, Victor’s mother.

Henry gets angry while Victor just sits quietly. Henry tells Victor he doesn’t have to listen to it, but he just says it’s okay. Henry won’t listen to Boyd and leaves. Boyd asks Victor if he understood what he said, but Victor just says he doesn’t want him to talk anymore. Boyd goes to leave and Victor says tells him he needs to find out about the Man in Yellow. Boyd asks what it has to do with the Man in Yellow and Victor tells him everything. If he’s back it could all be happening again.

Boyd has told everyone at Colony House about the reincarnation, the children’s bones, everything, off camera. Bakta questions if Jade and Tabitha have been there before if it means they all have been. Jade says he doesn’t think so. Kristi questions that this came from a mushroom trip and asks how it’s different than any other insane theories people have had about the place. Boyd tells her that he was the first one to call bull shit on it, but Jade saw something in the trip he couldn’t have known about: the door behind the wall, and also, because of what they did to Jim. He says it’s possible Jim died because of what Tabitha and Jade remembered. Boyd says that the message “knowledge comes at a cost” was meant to scare them, but he thinks it tells them something else, that for the first time, they are close to figuring this place out. When your enemy threatens you and tries to scare you, it’s because they are scared of you. Sophia is watching, interested. Bakta questions that he thinks the place is scared of them digging up the bones of the children because that could be what gets them home. Jade confirms this.

Henry comes in and is upset Boyd told everyone and says it’s not true and what he is doing isn’t right. He runs out and Jade goes after him. Jade tells him Miranda was right that saving the children is the only way to get everyone home and they are trying to finish what she started. Henry tells him that he might think he is helping people and smart enough to get everyone home, but the only thing he will cause is pain. He can’t save dead things, no matter how smart he thinks he is. He leaves again and Boyd tells Jade to give him some time; they have things to do.

Julie is smoking outside when her mother catches Her. Julie tells her that it helps her process things. Tabitha questions if she wants Ethan to see it. Ethan comes out and asks if Victor is his brother now. Julie tells him it’s not real. She says she knows that they think they’ve unlocked this mystery about the place, but the place doesn’t give them real; it gives them twisted ideas. Tabitha tells her if she had any doubt about anything she wouldn’t have told them, and Jade and Boyd wouldn’t have told everyone at Colony House. This upsets Julie, but Tabitha says this might be how they can go home. Before she can take off, Tabitha stops her, wanting to know she’s okay, and Julie tells her she isn’t, but she isn’t going to hurt herself.

Victor walks up. He tells Tabitha that he needs to find out about the Man in Yellow which means he needs to do something scary and asks her if she will come with him.

Boyd, talking to Kenny and Jade upstairs, says that they have one shot at this so they need to ask every question they can think of and questions besides the three of them who has been in the tunnels. Jade says that Victor has, and Kenny adds Tabitha has when the house collapsed. Boyd says that’s a start. They need all the info they can get on the layout and to map it. He wants to know every entrance and exit to the chamber and how long they have to dig, and then they need to figure out how not to get themselves killed. He adds to talk to Randall, because he’s spent a lot of time on the bus watching the creatures come out of the woods at night. They need to get as much intel they can on their behaviors and patterns, at the very least a head count. If they are going into the nest, he wants to know exactly how many they are dealing with. Kenny tells him that the place won’t make it easy. Once they push it’s going to push back hard. Boyd says he has an idea about that. Jade suddenly asks what is wrong with his hand, noticing it’s shaking. Boyd tells him it’s nothing and that they just told everyone downstairs some messed up stuff and the longer they get to stew on it, the greater the chance somebody gets in their head to do something stupid, so they need to do something smart, and they have to do it fast.

Acosta is sitting on the rock in the yard with the View Master as Boyd walks by. She guesses that it actually wasn’t just busy work he gave her, which he confirms. He tells her he was hoping she might find something useful about Tabitha and Jade. She questions they are talking about reincarnation and says if they go down into the tunnels, they are going to need help. Boyd says they will talk about it when the time comes, but right now he needs her back in the basement, and not just her, a whole team. They also need a team at the diner in the storerooms looking for anything they can tell him about a Man in a Yellow suit. She asks if he isn’t just looking for something to keep everyone’s minds off how crazy it all is. Boyd says if they are going to do this, they need to know exactly what is out there waiting for them. She asks if that’s all he has, and Boyd adds that they know he was there in the late 70s when Victor was a kid. She says it’s a start and throws him the View Master.

Back inside Colony House, Boyd, bored, looks at the View Master. He sees various locations and then a photo of him and his wife on their wedding day. He looks again and it’s gone. Kristi comes out and says that cognitively Donna seems fine. As far as any damage, she didn’t see anything catastrophic with the ultrasound, but she really needs a CRT or MRI. She tells him the hard part is going to be getting Donna to take it easy, but he can go see her. Kristi is upset and tells him he should have told her about Jade and Tabitha; they are supposed to be in it together. He tells her they are. She asks how he is feeling. He says he is dealing with the tremors but denies he is still seeing things except for the one time. She tells him he has a lot of people’s lives in his hands and to come to the clinic so she can do an exam.

Boyd goes in to see Donna. She says she heard about his big meeting downstairs and questions he thought it would be a good idea to gather a house full of emotionally unstable people and spend the night talking about reincarnation and the bones of dead children. Boyd says he didn’t have a choice, and she counters that’s because he took a sledgehammer to her wall. She asks if the door is something they need to worry about, and tells her no, because they tried to open it, and it’s sealed. He says that Jade says it leads to the tunnels, so they put an extra talisman on it just to be safe. She asks if they buried Roger yet, but he tells her he is still in the shed, which upsets her. Boyd says they need to pick a new spot for burying people; the cemetery is full. She asks sarcastically if he has any more good news for her. He tells her he needs her to tell him everything she can about the totems they brought back. Donna says she already told him everything, and he says to tell him again, because he’s going to see if they work on the creatures that come out of the woods. She thinks it’s a terrible idea. Even if he somehow kills one, they don’t stay dead. She questions he wants to risk putting someone else through what Fatima went through. He says that what he wants is to keep people safe in the tunnels and they need to deal with one problem at a time.

Acosta, talking to a group of people at Colony House, says she needs three people to go through the storage room with Elgin at the diner and the rest of them to come to the basement with her. Boyd comes out carrying a totem. Sophia watches him.

Marielle is in the shed with Roger when Kristi comes in. She asks Kristi if she knew anything about him and she says that every conversation they had was about his garden back home. Marielle says that her that her mother used to tell her that when people died, they just go somewhere else. She didn’t really believe in Heaven or Hell just that death was a transition to another place we can’t see from here. It comforted her when her mother passed, but whatever that place is, Roger doesn’t get to go, because he’s still there; they are all still there. Whatever they are doing to find the bones, they need to help.

Boyd talks through his plans with Ellis. He says they tend to spread out down the street, and according to Randall, some of them have patterns, nightly rituals; they can use that. If they catch one and stab it, they can head back into the station, and even if the station is blocked, they have plenty of exits along the street. Ellis asks what they do if something goes wrong, and his father says they improvise. Those things are used to them cowering in their homes trying to ignore them, the last thing they would expect is for them to head straight at them, and if the totems can hurt them or even slow them down it will make going into the tunnels safer. Ellis questions who is going to do it, and of course Boyd plans to be the one.

Henry goes to Tabitha’s house to talk, but no one is home. He goes in, calling for her. He sees Victor’s drawings on the table. One has his mother and sister, but not Henry. He suddenly hears a beep and sees a heart monitor and a hospital bracelet. Then someone shining is a light in his eyes, but it vanishes. He walks out confused.

Victor goes into the car boneyard with Tabitha and Ethan, and they look at the car the Man in Yellow came in. Tabitha opens the trunk, but there is nothing there. Victor goes around to look at the inside while she is distracted when she sees Miranda’s car.

Victor pulls a bag from the glove compartment. It’s full of teeth.

Tabitha and Ethan look at the other car. Tabitha has a brief flashback of Miranda. Victor comes up to them, upset, and tells them that they have to leave. When asked, he tells them about the bag of teeth and goes to show Ethan, but she stops him. He says Ethan needs to be prepared. He asks if she is really his mother. Last time she came to town with a boy and a girl and when the Man in Yellow showed up, everyone died, but the boy grew up alone and afraid and wasn’t prepared. Now she is here again with a boy and a girl and the Man in Yellow is back. Tabitha yells at him as Ethan walks off. She asks what’s wrong with him and goes after Ethan.

Boyd is looking at the totem when Sophia comes into the station. She says she was thinking about what he said earlier about going into the tunnels to dig up the bones and asks if it’s dangerous. He tells her it is, but it could be what helps them get home, though he admits they aren’t clear on how yet. She says if the bones are important, it’s not like the creatures who live in the tunnels are just going to let them take them. He says they won’t, but it turns out they might have a new card to play. He says that tonight they are going to see what the totems do to the things that come out in the woods.

Jade has laid out wires and things on the table in the bar to make a map of the tunnels. Kenny asks why they can’t just draw a map. He says he works better spatially. It’s a technique he used when designing his company, visualizing the space you want to move though. Kenny says they aren’t designing a company, but Jade says that it doesn’t matter, you apply the principles of what you know. He asks Kenny what he used to do but he doesn’t want to tell him. Jade makes guesses as Henry comes in. Kenny admits he worked in youth sports, as an administrator, and Jade still teases him, calling him Coach Kenny. Ellis comes in and Jade tells him, saying they have to get Kenny a whistle. Ellis wants to talk to Kenny outside.

Jade asks Henry what he did before he got there, and he says pretty much what he’s doing right now, drinking.

Sophia walks to the animal pen and takes an egg from the chicken coop and smells it. She does it again, and satisfied, puts that one in her pocket.

Julie is sitting at the diner when Elgin and the others come in. He stops to talk to her and tells her he never got to tell her he was sorry about her father. She asks about how his eye is doing. He says Kristi said it’s doing pretty good. She asks if he is going to tell her what happened, but he won’t. He asks if she thinks the stuff he heard about her mother is true. She just says that her mother thinks it is, which scares her. Every time someone there feels like they have a purpose but then discover the truth, someone always ends up dead. He tells her there has to be a truth to the town. She questions why it can’t just be a random cruelty that exists for no reason other than to do what it’s doing. She says she knows he wants to believe it’s all part of God’s plan, but to explain to her why he doesn’t have an eye. He says they are all being tested, and she questions that part of his test is being mutilated. She realizes she’s being mean and apologizes. He tells her there is a truth behind all of it. He says the place wins by throwing so many lies at you that you don’t believe the truth even when it’s staring at you right in the face.

At the bar, Henry tells Jade it isn’t right what they are doing, filling people’s head with nonsense and telling his son that about his mother. Jade just asks him if he has talked to Tabitha yet, and he says she wasn’t home when he stopped. Jade starts to suggest maybe he should cut down on the alcohol when Henry hears something.

Henry “wakes up” in another place with a nurse shining a light in his eyes. He’s in a hospital bed. “Victor” comes over to see him, but he’s completely different. Henry fades back as Jade is snapping his fingers for him to wake up. Scared, he takes off, not answering Jade what happened. Jade sniffs Henry’s drink.

Sara tells Boyd to let her be the one to go outside. Boyd tells he she's done enough and he needs people to be standing by to let him in. She says she killed her brother and tried to murder a little boy; nothing she does will ever be enough. He tells her when they go down into the tunnels, that’s when he will need her, and to just make sure she’s standing by the door.

Sophia goes in the shed and uncovers Roger. She whispers to the egg in another language. She smashes it on his chest and tells him it’s time to play.

Boyd walks through the street ringing the bell.

Donna comes out into the hall, and Fatima gets her back to bed. Donna says she can’t just lay there anymore, but Fatima tells her she has to. Donna tells her her bedside manner sucks. Fatima questions that if the thing with Jade and Tabitha is real if she really wants to die right before they all get to go home, because she was too stubborn to lay in bed for a minute. Donna says she was never that sassy, and Fatima says she gave birth to a monster, so people change.

Sophia comes into Colony House. She says with what Boyd is planning in town she’d rather not be there as the creatures terrify her and asks if that is all right. He welcomes her in.

Boyd comes to the station to get ready. It’s clear Ellis has talked to Kenny, who says he should be the one to go out there. Ellis says it makes more sense. Kenny says he’s his second, these are the things he is supposed to do. Boyd says he appreciates that, but it’s his plan and his risk. Ellis tells him he can’t do it; it’s not safe in his condition. Kenny asks what happens if his leg gives out again and he can’t get up. Boyd refuses to send anyone else out there. His hand starts shaking again and he yells. He knows they are right.

Later, after dark, Boyd reminds Kenny of the escape route up and down the street and that even if he can’t make it to a house for some reason, there are talismans on the bus and the other buildings, so for him to find the safest route he can and run. He tells Boyd he will be okay.

Sophia is whispering in tongues again. Roger wakes up and rips his face back apart, screaming.

Kenny times it to when the creatures are spread out. Boyd tells him to run, not to wait and see what happens. Kenny goes out and surprises the milkman by stabbing him with the totem. The creature falls and the others screech. Kenny watches and the milkman says, “just kidding,” and pulls it out. The creatures start blocking all the doors. Kenny runs for the bus. He gets inside, but Smiley stops him from shutting the door. Fatima “sees” it as it’s happening, sees Kenny run. Kenny makes it up to the roof through the hatch in the bus. The creatures surround the bus. Smiley comes up as Fatima watches in horror. Smiley says he killed Kenny’s father, and he made such funny noises. He asks if he does too. Smiley screeches and Fatima screams to stop. He looks down, confused, as his teeth and claws retract. With the distraction, Kenny pushes him off the roof and goes back down inside the bus, shutting the door in time.

Meanwhile, Roger rushes into Colony House. Elgin and another woman manage to shut the door before any creatures can get in. Patty tries to talk Roger down, but Elgin stabs him with the totem that was there. He falls. Patty screams and Sophia watches, smiling.
