DVD review: The Lazarus Effect - on Blu-ray Now

The Lazarus EffectsThe Lazarus Effect follows medical researchers Frank Walton (Mark Duplass) and his fiancée Zoe McConnell (Olivia Wilde) who developed a serum, codenamed "Lazarus," originally intended to extend the time that people can safely be brought back from dying without brain damage. Instead, what they realize they have is a serum to return life to the dead.

Not only that, but after a trial with a dog, they discover it does much more than even they had thought, giving the animal increased brain activity and aggression.

After the company that funded their research is bought out and they seize everything for their unauthorized animal testing, the team decides they must recreate the experiment as proof of their creation, and break back into the lab.

However, before they can complete another resurrection, Zoe is fatally electrocuted during the experiment.

Strange Magic - A Modern Fairytale Musical with Classic Themes - Available Now

Strange MagicStrange Magic tells the story of two side by side kingdoms, the Fairy Kingdom and the Dark Forest. Along the border grow magical flowers, which are used for love potions, but the Bog King (Alan Cumming) from the Dark Forest wants them destroyed.

The story follows fairy Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood), who is about to marry fellow fairy Roland (Sam Palladio), until she discovers he is unfaithful and swears off love. Things take a turn for the worse after a love potion is created and her sister (Meredith Anne Bull) is accidentally dosed and then kidnapped. Eventually she goes head to head with the Bog King, who may not be as evil as he seems.

The story is a romance with classic themes: a princess melts the heart of a monster; the beast can get the beauty. While the story is very cliche at times, it still should be enjoyable to a younger audience or someone looking for a happily ever-after fairytale.

DVD Review: Broadchurch: The Complete Second Season - A Gripping Mystery That Keeps You Guessing

BroadchurchSeason two of BBC America's award-winning mystery drama series Broadchurch picks up right where the first season finale left off: Detective Ellie Miller (Olivia Colemans)'s husband Joe (Matthew Gravelle) has been arrested after confessing to the murder of local boy Danny Latimer (Oskar McNamara). Miller and the town struggle to accept that fact and move past it as they face the trial that will continue to tear everyone apart.

Rather than a new mystery, the second season delves into the original murder case of the two girls that Detective Alec Hardy (David Tennant) couldn't solve, that was only touched upon in season one, when a key witness returns to Broadchurch seeking Hardy's help.

The new whodunnit, created by Chris Chibnall, is just as thrilling and gripping as season one and really pulls you into the investigation. The script is beautifully written and performed brilliantly. Tennant and Coleman especially fit their roles perfectly. It's fun to watch the two detectives banter back and forth. Andre Buchan and Jodie Whittaker as Mark and Beth Latimer and Charlotte Beaumont as their daughter Chloe are very believable as the grieving family. Arthur Darvill also returns as Reverend Paul Coates and is excellent in the role.

DVD Review: Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death - Creepy Visuals Without the Scares - Out Now

Woman in Black 2: Angel of DeathFollowing the success of the original movie from 2012, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death had the makings of another great horror film: the creepy sets and atmosphere, a well-chosen cast, and trailers that made you want to see what the angry spirit was up to now. I was quite excited to receive the Blu-ray. The original film starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter franchise) was haunting and full of great scares that were reminiscent of more classic horror films. Upon the start of the sequel; however, I was sadly disappointed.

Although the visuals were there and the actors did a fine job with what they were given, the scares were not, which let's face it, is the most important part of a horror film. It felt disjointed at points and dragged on at others. The first third of the film to me felt wasted and nothing really occurred until forty-five minutes in.

The script and story itself wasn't bad; it was actually decently interesting, but something about the delivery was off.

DVD Review: The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season, Out Now on Blu-ray & DVD

The Walking DeadAMC's The Walking Dead follows a group of survivors during the zombie apocalypse as they battle "walkers" and often each other, as they learn that the living can be more dangerous than the dead.

The series keeps getting better, and season four is the best yet. The first half of this season focuses on what happens when a simple virus threatens to destroy everything they have built at the prison, when people get sick and die and then turn into walkers. A big storyline that starts during this half is discovering who burns the bodies of two of the infected, as well as who has been feeding the walkers. The first half culminates with the return of The Governor (David Morrissey) and the subsequent brutal standoff.

The second half of the season focuses on the survivors trying to regroup after being separated during the prison attack. They also meet a trio of new characters along the way, who might have some insight on the walker virus. The groups work to find their way back to one another on the way to Terminus, which may be their salvation, or it may be something much more sinister.

DVD Review: Oculus Out Now on Blu-ray & DVD

OculusThe horror film Oculus follows Kaylie Russell (Karen Gillian) and her brother Tim (Brenton Thwaites), who survived untold horrors ten years prior when Tim was convicted of murdering their parents. Tim, who has been released from the mental institution, is ready to move forward with his life, but Kaylie wants to exact revenge on what she believes was true culprit, an antique mirror called the Lasser Glass. She believes the mirror has caused similar carnage throughout history to anyone who has stared into it, and will stop at nothing to destroy it.

Overall I really enjoyed the film. For a horror film it was at moments frightening and often downright creepy. The story was engaging and the film was well acted. The special effects were also realistic without being overly done.
