SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Haven 4.4 Review: “Lost and Found”

By John Keegan

haven_iconLike the majority of episodes this season, “Lost and Found” balances the long-term plot arc of Audrey/Lexie, her fate, and the impact on the whole situation in Haven with the “Trouble of the Week” format. The latter keeps things grounded in familiar territory while the big changes to the 27-year cycle are explored in the former, but it also takes something away from the notion that things are dramatically different than they have been in the past few centuries.

The Vampire Diaries 5.1 Review: “I Know What You Did Last Summer”

By John Keegan

vampire-diaries-iconNot long into the fifth season premiere for The Vampire Diaries, I started wondering if someone had tossed various season premieres from the Buffyverse into a blender as inspiration. Not that this is necessarily a bad idea, but Elena’s college years began in some rather familiar ways. I suppose there are only so many variations on a theme that one can invoke.

Agents of SHIELD 1.2 Review: “0-8-4?

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

SHIELDiconAs many reviews have observed, the second episode of a TV show is the one that tells audiences how things will function from week-to-week, now that the business of introducing the premise and characters is (mostly) finished. Will Agents of SHIELD focus more on action, or character beats? Will it be all superheroes or other phlebotinum from the Marvel films, or branch out into its own mythology? The results vary, and while the episode itself is entertaining and helps develop the core team of characters, it also shows an unwillingness to stand as its own storytelling entity.

Sleepy Hollow 1.3 Rev iew: “For The Triumph of Evil”

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

sleepyhollowiconPersonal and literal demons come back to haunt Abbie in this episode. Her character is all the better for this kind of exploration into what drove her and her sister Jennifer apart when they were younger. This is the deepest part of a decidedly average episode of Sleepy Hollow. The show is still struggling to find the correct format for an episode to run smoothly. So much focus here is on the Mills sisters and their backstory that there isn’t much time devoted to anything else. Crane is obviously the most interesting character on the show right now and with this episode, it is showing that the writers want to keep the focus on either Crane or Mills. When one so dominates the story, the other will recede to the background. The other aspects of the series aren’t developed enough at this time to pick up the slack if the main characters’ plots can’t carry the episode.

Homeland 3.1 Review: “Tin Man is Down”

By John Keegan

homeland_iconThe second season of Homeland started off strong, but eventually descended into 24-esque territory, where characters were doing more and more ridiculous things to keep the increasingly ludicrous plot moving forward. It was only the shocking death toll and apparent departure of Brody that made the second season finale so promising. It left the faithful with the obvious question: what would the third season of Homeland look like?

The Good Wife 5.1 Review: “Everything is Ending”

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

thegoodwife-iconI really hope this show can finally dispense with the love triangle subplot that has been going on with Will, Alicia, and Peter now. Last season’s cliffhanger (that really wasn’t a cliffhanger) ended not with Alicia meeting Will at her apartment, but meeting Cary to discuss their new work arrangement. And I think that’s the way to go forward with this series.

Person of Interest 3.1 Review: “Liberty”

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys

person_of_interest_iconLast season, Person of Interest‘s return had the cliffhanger of Root’s abduction of Finch to propel it forward. This season’s opener faces a very different task. The first two seasons have been an extended prologue, with the Machine’s newly-minted sentience and the elevation of Root and Shaw to series regulars recasting the show’s premise and team dynamics. As a result, this feels closer to a pilot, with its need to check in on everyone.

Haven 4.3 Review: “Bad Blood”

By John Keegan

haven_iconMuch like the previous episode, this felt like the writers moving the story incrementally closer to Audrey/Lexie’s return to Haven, while filling the rest of the time with a “Trouble of the Week” episode. Granted, it reintroduced Duke’s “gift” to anyone who may have forgotten how it worked, and it continued to explore the psychological fallout of the continuance of the Troubles (and the meteor shower), but it still felt like the series was marking time until it could really let loose.

Agents of SHIELD 1.1 Review: “Pilot”

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

SHIELDiconA new show from Joss Whedon will always be a big deal, let alone a spin-off from one of the juggernauts of the superhero genre and one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Expectations are naturally high, but a show like “Agents of SHIELD” was never going to succeed if it tried its best to emulate The Avengers or Iron Man, and in the pilot episode, it wisely doesn’t try. Instead, the Whedon clan have set out to create a different kind of experience: low-key, episodic, grounded in ordinary characters struggling against extraordinary situations, whilst still having the hallmarks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
