SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive Video Interview: Adrianne Palicki & Penny Johnson Jerald Talk The Orville: New Horizons, Premiering Today

The OrvilleToday, the third season of Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville: New Horizons comes to Hulu. The epic space adventure follows the crew of the S.S. Orville as they explore the galaxy.

One of the main relationships in the series is with Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane), who commands the S.S. Orville, and Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), his ex-wife. Palicki recently spoke with SciFi Vision about where their relationship is headed this season. “I mean, I can only tell you so much,” teased the actress. “…I will just say it will evolve. But the wonderful thing to watch these two is to see that they’ve become such dear friends and dependent on each other. They lean on each other a lot, and you see that more than ever, I think, in this particular season. So, it will evolve in one way or the other.”

DVD Review: Lucifer: The Complete Fifth Season is Not to be Missed

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.

Lucifer: The Complete Fifth SeasonToday the fifth season of the hit Netflix series Lucifer comes to Blu-ray and DVD. Based on the characters of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic book series, the show centers on Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), who has abandoned his throne in Hell to live on Earth where he runs the nightclub, Lux, and since season one, works as an LAPD consultant, with his partner, Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). Together, they solve crimes often dealing with angelic, demon, and other supernatural threats.

By the end of season four, Chloe has not only accepted her discovery that Lucifer is the actual devil but confessed to him that she loves him. This makes Lucifer realize from a prophecy that evil will be unleashed on the Earth. As such, although not returning those three words, after a kiss, Lucifer returns to rule over Hell to protect Chloe and Earth.

Season five originally aired on Netflix in two chunks. In the first half of season five, Lucifer eventually makes his way back to LA, but things are not as he left them, as his twin, Michael (also Ellis), has come to Earth, wanting to take over his identity. Lucifer must face his brother’s actions as well as confront his true feelings for Chloe. In the second half of the season, God (Dennis Haysbert) comes down to Earth, and the fights between Lucifer and Michael come to a head.

Interview: EPs Melinda Hsu Taylor, Cameron Johnson on the CWs New Sci-Fi Series, Tom Swift

Tom SwiftThe CW’s new sci-fi adventure series, Tom Swift, premieres on Tuesday, May 31. The character was first introduced in season two of Nancy Drew in an episode meant to serve as a backdoor pilot. Like Nancy Drew, Tom Swift is based on classic YA characters from the early 20th century (the first Swift novel was published in 1910.), but this is not your grandmother’s teenage hero. As reimagined by CBS Studios, Tom is still a genius inventor and heir to his father’s business, but he also is unimaginably wealthy, black, and openly gay. Enormously charming, this hot young billionaire is the man who many would kill to be – or be with.

While the new series is a spinoff, it’s unlikely fans will see a crossover anytime soon. At a recent press day, star Tian Richards (Dumplin) told journalists that the two shows are not on the same timeline. “It's been three years since Tom Swift was in Horseshoe Bay. That takes place in 2019; we take place in current day. So, Tom has definitely grown up a little more. When we first meet him [in Nancy Drew], he's still trying to get the meteorite to build the spaceship for his father. At the top of our series, we meet him when he has just completed that spaceship.”

R.J. Cyler, Sebastian Chacon, and Donald Elise WatkinsEmergency, from writer K.D. Dávila and director Carey Williams, follows a group of college students who find a high school girl (Maddie Nichols) unconscious in their living room during a night of partying and struggle with whether or not to call for help.

SciFi Vision recently talked to the cast in an exclusive interview about what first drew them to the roles. Donald Elise Watkins, who plays Kunle, knew it was a special project right away. “You want to be a part of things like that,” the actor told the site. “It's like, ‘Whoa, this is special; this can go somewhere. I feel like I can offer my assistance, and I think that there can be a lot of people that can play this, but there's something else that I can bring to this character, to this role, that will [have] of some sort of merit.’ I've never really had an opportunity to delve into a character in this way.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Now & Then Creative Team on Shooting Two Timelines, Working in Miami

Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira, and Gideon RaffNow & Then, the new mystery series from Apple TV+, has a pretty straightforward setup: a group of college friends find their lives are forever changed when a graduation party ends in tragedy. Twenty years later, the remaining five are reluctantly reunited when someone threatens to expose their secrets.

What’s exciting about this production is the study in contrasts: the action is set in 2000 and 2020, with two sets of actors playing the same characters, dialogue in both Spanish and English, and major plot twists that you won’t see coming.

The creative team describes the story as taking place in two timelines: pre-accident and post-accident. For director Gideon Raff (The Spy, Homeland), who helmed the first two episodes, that meant “giving this story a visual language and telling the story emotionally with the camera.” To create that language, Raff used a range of approaches and technologies.

Exclusive: Fear the Walking Dead's Colby Hollman

***The following interview contains major spoilers for 7.14***

Colby HollmanOn tonight’s all-new episode of Fear the Walking Dead, things came to a head when Strand (Colman Domingo) brought Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), who was ready to fight, into the tower to talk. However, when Alicia made him aware that she was dying, he changed his plans and agreed to work with her. Wes, played by Colby Hollman, who recently left Luciana (Danay Garcia) to come to the tower after she lied, had stood by Strand and was not happy with his decision and turned against the two of them. In the end of the episode, Strand stabs and kills Wes, not wanting Alicia to have to do it.

Hollman knew since they started filming the back half of the season that Wes was a goner. “What Ian [Goldberg] and Andrew [Chambliss] would do,” explained the actor to SciFi Vision during a recent exclusive, “is [with] every one of us, they’d give us a call before we started filming, and they’d tell us the arc of our character episode by episode, what was going to be happening…So, I was prepared for it.”

The actor feels that they honored Wes with the death. “I feel like this was just kind of his time to go. He really had nothing else to live for. He came off killing his brother and then [being] betrayed by somebody that he loved so dearly in Luciana, and [he was] not seeing Alicia anymore…So, it's kind of like, ‘what else does he have to live for?’…So, the ending of the tower, it seems to be right that it is also the ending for Wes.”

Exclusive Video Interview: K.D. Dávila and Carey Williams on Creating Emergency, Now in Theaters

Carey Williams and K.D. DávilaToday, Emergency comes to theaters. The film, written by K.D. Dávila and directed by Carey Williams, tells the funny but also emotional story of a group of college students, who during a night of partying, find an unconscious girl in their living room and must decide whether or not calling someone could make the situation worse for them.

The idea for the film, actually came from real life events, according to the writer. “The story is loosely inspired by stuff that has happened, actually, to several friends of mine,” Dávila told SciFi Vision during a recent interview, “having kind of a Goldilocks and the Three Bears moment of finding an unconscious white woman in your house who was intoxicated and having to figure out, ‘what do I do?’ I think that this is a situation where we wanted to make a movie that was about that phenomenon where people of color in America have a burden of having to think about how you're being perceived at all times.

Interview: Rosie Perez & Žjelko Ivanek Star in New Apple TV+ Thriller Now & Then

***The following interview contains slight spoilers***

Rosie Perez and Žjelko IvanekAppleTV+ has a new crime series out today! Now & Then tells the story of five college friends whose lives are forever changed after a night of partying ends in tragedy. Twenty years later, they are reluctantly reunited by a threat that puts their seemingly perfect lives at risk. While the eight episodes center around a mysterious death, the story is really about youthful dreams and the reality of adulthood.

Set in Miami and shot mostly in Spanish, the series stars Rosie Perez (The Flight Attendant) and Zjelko Ivanek (12 Monkeys) as the lead detectives on a twenty-year-old case. Now & Then also features an exciting cast of international stars as the five friends still reeling from the bad decision they made  years ago: Marina de Tavira (Roma), José María Yazpik, Maribel Verdú, Manolo Cardona, and Soledad Villamil.  Together, these seven talented actors have dozens of award nominations and wins, far too many to mention here.

Perez and Ivanek are the only two actors who play themselves in both time periods. In 2000, Perez’s detective Flora Neruda is a rookie investigating a car crash with her partner, Ivanek’s older and more jaded John Sullivan. In 2020, that case still haunts Flora until a phone call brings all the players back together.
