SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive Video Interview: La Brea's McKenzie & Mirchandaney on Lucas & Scott's Friendship

Josh McKenzie and Rohan MirchandaneyIn season one of La Brea people were just getting to know each other and they didn’t all get along well. Lucas (Josh McKenzie) was especially abrasive. “When you're lumped in with a group of people you've only just met,” McKenzie told SciFi Vision during a recent interview, “you start looking for the tropes, the archetypes of these people, and you kind of don't look much further than that, because it's easier for you, in a survival sense…I think Lucas was the outsider from the get-go and made it pretty clear that he was the outsider and he had a lot of anger.”

Lucas especially butted heads with Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney). “I think Scott saw [Lucas] as somewhat of a bully with the way that he behaved…and I think Lucas kind of saw Scott as maybe weaker than what Scott actually is,” said McKenzie.

“I think a lot of the characters in La Brea can really dismiss Scott at times,” added Mirchandaney who also took part in the interview.

Exclusive Video Interview: Karen Pirie Star Lauren Lyle

Lauren LyleBased on the best-selling novels by Val McDermid, Karen Pirie, which drops today on BritBox, follows the title character, played by Lauren Lyle, a brilliant young detective who is given a promotion and tasked with reopening a murder investigation from a cold case which has been publicized recently on a controversial true crime podcast. In 1996 the body of Rosie Duff was discovered by three college students in St. Andrew’s graveyard. Suspicion fell on the students, but with a lack of evidence, the charges were dropped, and the case was never solved. When the case is reopened, someone will stop at nothing to prevent DS Pirie from uncovering the truth.

According to Lyle, who spoke with SciFi Vision during a recent interview, Pirie speaks her mind. “I felt like I connected quite well with her, [but] the hardest part probably is how direct she,” the actress told the site. “I think she's so fearless…She really says it how it is, and she's not got any niceties about it at all…but I did connect with her; I knew why she was doing what she was doing.”

Exclusive Video Interview: La Brea’s Santiago & Moore on the Sisters’ Relationship in Season 2

Lily Santiago and Michelle Vergara MooreIn the fourth episode of La Brea this season, thinking they may be killed by the wolves, Veronica (Lily Santiago) finally reveals to her sister, now going by Ella (Michelle Vergara Moore), the secret she’s been hiding, that she was the one who pointed her out to Aaron as the one to kidnap when she was a child. According to Santiago, who spoke with SciFi Vision last week, it’s a “great opportunity” for them to reconnect as sisters. “Obviously, until episode four, Veronica has sort of been back to her old self anytime she's interacting with Ella,” explained the actress. “Then, we find out why in episode four, and it's just only because this is a live or die moment, and we might just die. I don't want to die with this. I don't want to keep this. I need to release it not necessarily for forgiveness, which she luckily enough gets, but just to share it, to have it in the world, to have it known. So, now they have a chance to be open to trust each other again, to rely on each other again.”

The actress also teased that the characters get some great opportunities coming up in episodes six and seven to be there for each other.

“It's really nice to see Veronica finally lightening up and getting over that trauma,” added Moore, saying that it was a shocking reveal. “…I think that audiences will enjoy what happens in the next few episodes and seeing the new Veronica to see exactly what's going to happen with her…There are a couple of twists and turns that are about to come up.”

Exclusive Interview: The Walking Dead's Eleanor Matsuura on Yumiko's Decision

***The following contains spoilers for 11.20***

Eleanor MatsuuraIn tonight’s all-new episode of The Walking Dead, Yumiko, played by Eleanor Matsuura, was being forced by Pamela Milton (Laila Robins) to be the prosecutor in Eugene (Josh McDermitt)’s case, as he is being blamed for the events leading to her son’s death. However, at the eleventh hour, while speaking publicly to make the announcement, she instead says she will be defending him.

According to Matsuura, who recently spoke with SciFi Vision, the plan only occurred to Yumiko in the moment, and she loves that relentlessness. “I think for so much of the episode, Yumiko feels like her back's against the wall,” the actress told the site. “She really doesn't know what to do. Pamela has played a blinder. Whatever the chess move is, it's not quite checkmate, but it's not looking great…It's only once I've stood up on the podium that I realize that actually being in public is my biggest way to stay safe…I realize in that moment, Pamela is not going to stop me. I have free speech so I can be like, ‘actually, I'm going to turn this around.’”

The actress teased for fans to “be prepared to be surprised” for what is to come next and to “expect the unexpected.”

Advance Review: The Power of the Doctor - The End of an Era

Note: I’m going to write this fairly spoiler free and leave out the big things, but if you want to stay completely spoiler free, read after it airs tonight.

The Power of the DoctorTonight, BBC America airs the new special “The Power of the Doctor,” which aired earlier today in the UK. The episode marks Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the Doctor. In the feature-length episode, the Doctor battles not only her greatest enemies, but her arch nemesis, The Master (Sacha Dhawan).

If you’ve read my reviews, you know I love the series, and there is a lot to love about Chris Chibnall’s final episode. The episode has tons of shock and awe, but unfortunately, some people may think that’s all it is. “The Timeless Child” really split fans in a way an episode hadn’t in a long time, maybe ever, and while this episode doesn’t rewrite history or retcon anything (thankfully) it does feel a bit like Chibnall is throwing everything in to make an epic end. The problem is, it’s two-sided. It’s the centennial special, and not only his last episode, but Whittaker’s as well, so he should be pulling out the big guns and making a bang. The problem is, the Daleks, the Cybermen, and even more so, the Master, are huge villains in Doctor Who mythology, and they pack so much more of a punch when they are used sparingly, because they are something that as a fan you look forward to. The issue to me is they’ve been overused in the series so much lately that they don’t feel as special anymore. The episode doesn’t shine as much as it should, because that makes it feel a bit repetitive. That all being said, even though it does feel like a lot is packed in there, I personally really enjoyed this one. It does have a follow through and is vastly superior to the Flux storyline that a lot of people (at times myself included) picked apart. It has a beginning, middle, and end and doesn’t jump all over the place like the former.

Exclusive Video Interviews: Creator & Cast on the Return of One of Us is Lying, Now Streaming on Peacock

One of Us is LyingToday, Peacock released the second season of the series One of Us is Lying, based on the book by Karen M. McManus. In season one, a student, Simon (Mark McKenna), was killed during detention, and four students spent the season trying to find out what really happened and prove their innocence, culminating in another student’s death. Although season two is not about figuring out the killer, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t just as thrilling. “Season two is about a killing that they did commit,” explained creator and executive producer Erica Saleh in a recent interview with SciFi Vision. “So, it's a little darker. It's a little twistier. They're trying to cover that up, and they find out at the end of season one that someone knows what they did…The mystery is who knows and how far is this person going to push them, and how far will they go to cover up what they did?”

SciFi Vision also spoke with the stars of the series about their respective roles.

At the end of season one, the students decided that to help hide their secret they couldn’t be seen hanging out together, which in season two is tough for Nate (Cooper van Grootel) and Bronwyn (Marianly Tejada) who developed feelings for each other. The two spoke to the trajectory of their relationship in season two.
