SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Ringer 1.17 Review: "What We Have Is Worth the Pain"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

ringer_iconApparently, Siobhan's goal now is to get Andrew to kill her sister and then she can go to the police or the SEC to expose his business Ponzi scheme, make sure he's in prison, then run off to happiness with Henry. At least, I think that's what her plan is. It changes on the fly so often and is dependent on a lot of contrivances to move from point to point.

The Secret Circle 1.16 Review: "Lucky"

by John Keegan

the-secret-circle-iconThe winter cliffhanger for “The Secret Circle” didn’t exactly inspire much confidence in the direction the story was going, and sure enough, this episode seems to meander around a bit. There are some big moments, but they just don’t seem to have the same impact.

The Vampire Diaries 3.15 Review: "1912"

By John Keegan

vampire-diaries-iconThe mystery of who might be running around Mystic Falls, taking out members of the founding families, has been percolating in the background for a little while now. All of the evidence seemed to point away from Alaric, and instead to someone trying to frame him. The truth, instead, is a lot stranger.

"The Voice" Battles Continue, Six Artists Advance

By Karen Moul

alt
The Voice
battle rounds continued this week with twelve more contestants on the chopping block. Overall the performances were better than last week, although the coaches continued to pit similar singers against each other. This didn’t always result in a memorable duet. It does, however, set us up for some difficult decisions down the road.

In addition, some of the song choices seemed designed to favor certain artists, but this stage of the competition is no longer simply about vocal talent. Style and stage presence are becoming more important and to win this thing you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone and make a song your own.

Highlights of the episode included a fascinating performance by Lindsey and Lee singing Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box.” Each struggled in rehearsal, but they both have such unusual voices that you either loved this matchup or hated it. Kim and Whitney were portrayed as the battle of the divas, but there was never much doubt that Kim’s age and experience would give her the edge.

Jamar and Jamie brought the episode to a climax with and an emotional segment that had both artists sobbing. Jamar is a strong competitor, both in terms of vocal talent and his inspiring personal story, and he has a real shoot at winning the recording contract.

After the episode, the six advancing artists spoke with us about their experiences in the battle round.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8 pm on NBC.

Alcatraz 1.8 Review: "Clarence Montgomery"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

alcatraz_iconThe most troubling thought I had while watching this episode of "Alcatraz" was that the guest star playing the Criminal of The Week was far more interesting than the main cast. This has been the case for much of the show's admittedly uneven season thus far, but it particularly stood out to me here. The show's writers can't seem to find much variety from the norm here, as Clarence Montgomery apparently keeps committing murder in the same fashion as he did in the past. It's consistent with all the other criminals from 1963 who have come forward to the future, but there is still no explanation for why they are acting in this manner. I fear we may never get that explanation with the show running so close to the end.

Once Upon a Time 1.15 Review: "Red Handed"

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys

once_upon_a_timeIf “Once Upon A Time” was America’s greatest satirist (and tweaker of Arthurian legend), it might tell me the rumors of its death have been greatly exaggerated. Since its writers will never equal even the misquoted Twain, it decided to send the delectable Meghan Ory to whisper similar sentiments in my ear. Certainly her sections are a return to form. And I swear my judgment was not impaired by all the blood that rushing from my brain.
