SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Supernatural 7.16 Review: "Out with the Old"

By John Keegan

supernatural_iconWith Dean still not sure where his mind is at, and Sam dealing with a very chatty and empowered Lucifer in his head, I suppose that it was the perfect time to revisit the Leviathans and Dick Roman’s plans for the human race. And sure enough, it’s more than just an excuse to find new and hilarious ways to toss out Dick jokes.

Spartacus: Vengeance 2.8 Review: "Balance"

By John Keegan

spartacus-poster“Spartacus” is usually that kind of series that delivers unexpected reversals of fortune, to the point where it becomes almost impossible to imagine that much of an episode would be devoted to a plot device that is so overused as to be laughable. So it’s surprising that the writers would go with something like a “Trojan Horse” scenario, even if they did try to frame it in a way that illuminates Glaber’s character.

The Walking Dead 2.12: "Better Angels"

By Karen Moul

alt
Week twelve brought us a landmark chapter of The Walking Dead, as the season’s slow build paid off with a truly game-changing episode. Rick and Shane finally brought their love-hate relationship to a resolution, and Shane’s death brought undeniable proof that the zombie infection is not passed by the walkers.

From the opening scene to the stunning climax, almost everything about “Better Angels” was right on. The tone of the episode was infused with a real sense of foreboding. The sudden cold weather, the grimness and depression, preparations for winter, it all created an undercurrent of threat that built to a stunning climax. Even Dale’s funeral had an air of danger. I loved the way Rick’s talk of humanity was juxtaposed against shots of the smaller group hunting walkers, not just beheading but beating and stomping them to death. It was personal, violent and showed how angry they are at losing Dale. But few viewers missed the irony of Rick’s voiceover about honoring Dale. I’m not sure this group is capable of taking Dale’s message to heart.

Merlin 4.11: "The Hunter's Heart"

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright

merlin"The Hunter's Heart" is a fairly good representation of "Merlin's" typical approach to blending an episodic story with the needs of an over-arching story, with the larger story taking a slightly heavier priority in this season than in any previous one. Most of the time, I've felt that the episodic storytelling detracts from the show's attempts to tell a serialized story, and that the connection between the two story layers was disappointingly thin. But at least in this case, the merger of the two stories feels relatively organic.

Justified 3.9 Review: "Loose Ends"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

Justified_iconI love that this show's plot is so versatile that it will highlight certain characters in one episode, yet that doesn't take away from other characters. Here, Limehouse and Boyd get the spotlight. That doesn't mean Quarles is forgotten. Quarles is now Raylan's primary concern.

Ringer 1.17 Review: "What We Have Is Worth the Pain"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

ringer_iconApparently, Siobhan's goal now is to get Andrew to kill her sister and then she can go to the police or the SEC to expose his business Ponzi scheme, make sure he's in prison, then run off to happiness with Henry. At least, I think that's what her plan is. It changes on the fly so often and is dependent on a lot of contrivances to move from point to point.

By Lynn Tackitt

Sean BerdyAs the season progresses on Switched At Birth, you find yourself more and more invested in the characters and what they will do next. Why? Because the show is well written and has a cast of actors and actresses that bring their multi talents to the table.

One actor who jumps out at you from the screen is Sean Berdy. Although he is a deaf actor, you would never consider it a handicap. He excels at bringing the deaf community to the forefront of the story and shows that it need not slow you down or hamper your abilities to dream big and make them come true.

He is a passionate young man with a great outlook on life that is sure to open many doors for him.

The Secret Circle 1.16 Review: "Lucky"

by John Keegan

the-secret-circle-iconThe winter cliffhanger for “The Secret Circle” didn’t exactly inspire much confidence in the direction the story was going, and sure enough, this episode seems to meander around a bit. There are some big moments, but they just don’t seem to have the same impact.

The Vampire Diaries 3.15 Review: "1912"

By John Keegan

vampire-diaries-iconThe mystery of who might be running around Mystic Falls, taking out members of the founding families, has been percolating in the background for a little while now. All of the evidence seemed to point away from Alaric, and instead to someone trying to frame him. The truth, instead, is a lot stranger.
