SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Burn Notice 6.4 Review: "Under the Gun"

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys

burn_notice_iconWhen the death of a major character is teased in a show’s trailer, it’s often a desperate attempt to raise flagging interest. This time, “Burn Notice” decides to put Sam Axe “Under the Gun,” and it doesn’t really have the desired effect. While giving Bruce Campbell the spotlight is always good value, the result is a generic episode that nudges the plot forward in fits and starts, much like the Charger through most of this.

Eureka 5.13 Review: "Just Another Day"

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright

eurekasigniconIt almost goes without saying, but this was definitely the most difficult "Eureka" review I've ever had to write. My deep fondness for the show demands a very careful approach to writing the review for what is very likely the very last "Eureka" episode that will ever air. I've spent many lines in the past few reviews lamenting the weaknesses of the fifth season and the unfortunate replacement of the final, six-episode season with only a single episode. But "Eureka" is now over. Was the finale a fitting and satisfying send-off to this beloved sci-fi show?

Falling Skies 2.6 Review: "Homecoming"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

Falling-Skies-iconFor all of its tries at showing the epic scope of its stories, "Falling Skies" seems to have trouble with the minor details. I would normally be one to ignore these kinds of things, but they add up in the face of an episode that keeps the skitters, mechs, and alien overlords completely off-screen (for obvious budgetary concerns), thus limiting the threats our heroes must face. An amazing amount of coincidental events pop up yet again in this episode, with the sudden reappearances of two past characters who were thought to be out of the big picture.

Exclusive: Connor Jessup Talks "Falling Skies"

Exclusive Interview with Connor Jessup of Falling Skies
Interview by Jamie Ruby
Written by Jamie Ruby

Connor JessupFalling Skies, which recently entered its second season on TNT, focuses on the lives of the survivors of an alien invasion, the Second Mass resistance group, made up of both soldiers and civilians. They are led by Captain Weaver (Will Patton) and unlikely leader Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), former college professor and father of three.

Last season the aliens kidnapped many of the children and "harnessed" them, putting them under their control. Some of the children who were harnessed, including Mason's middle son, Ben, were rescued. The harness, however, could not be completely removed from Ben's spine.

The actor who plays Ben Mason, Connor Jessup, recently talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision about season two in an exclusive interview.

True Blood 5.6 Review: "Helpless"

By John Keegan

true_blood_iconSome might think that having Alan Ball, the current showrunner for the series, write an episode would be a positive development. Unfortunately, this is "True Blood", and all it does is reinforce the notion that Ball has lost sight of what made the series good in the first place. As others have said time and again, "True Blood" has descended into "fang opera", not unlike "Dark Shadows" and "Twilight" before it.

Breaking Bad 5.1 Review: "Live Free or Die"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

breaking_bad_iconWalt's audacious murder of Gus Fring in last season's finale guaranteed his family's safety. After all, the drug kingpin threatened to kill everyone close to Walt and Walt couldn't allow that to happen. With Gus out of the way, though, the transformation of Walt from meek chemistry teacher to "Heisenberg" is now complete.

Lost Girl 2.13 Review: "Berometz. Trick. Pressure."

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumbThis is a tough one to assess. From the get-go, there's a sense of Big Things Happening in this episode and that's definitely borne out by the end, making "Barometz. Trick. Pressure." impossible to discount or ignore, yet the way it all comes together leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It's like the important exposition-packed chapter of a novel, but that doesn't necessarily translate to an episode of television, which still needs to be a self-contained story amidst the larger one, and it's on that front this instalment lets down the audience.

Thanks for Visiting Eureka

By Jamie Ruby

EurekaEureka, which is currently Syfy's longest-running scripted series, is a story about a town full of geniuses that conduct top-secret research for the government. Anything and everything can happen in the Pacific Northwest town.

Unfortunately the much loved show comes to an end tonight with the series finale. I thought the end was fitting for the show - it tied up some loose ends and put the characters on a path that I think fans will be happy with. The episode also boasted some great guest stars (including Mythbusters' Grant Imahara!) with all your favorites returning for a last good bye.

Leverage: Season Five Premiere Preview

By Jamie Ruby

LeverageTNT's hit series Leverage returns tonight with all new episodes. The show focuses on a group of con artists - Sophie (Gina Bellman), the grifter; Hardison (Aldis Hodge), the hacker; Parker (Beth Riesgraf), the thief; Eliot (Christian Kane), the hitter; and Nate (Timothy Hutton), the mastermind - who now use their skills to help those in need.

Leverage is one of my favorite shows on tv - it's smart - the cons that they plot always are full of twists and often leave you guessing, and the season premiere, "The Very Big Bird Job," is no different.
