SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive Video Interview: Brian Watkins on Creating Outer Range & Blending Genres

Brian WatkinsBlending a western saga with a supernatural mystery, Outer Range, which premieres today on Prime Video, tells the story of Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) and his family as they struggle to keep their land. Things become much more complicated when Royal finds a mysterious void on his ranch and events begin to unfold.

Containing elements of drama, humor, westerns, and science fiction, creator Brian Watkins, who recently spoke with SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview, said that it’s the emotional aspect of the series that joins everything together. “I feel like the sci-fi in the show we always try to tell people is meant to be not extraterrestrial, but terrestrial, very kind of, of the earth,” said Watkins. “In that way,” he continued, “I think the blending of it only blends when we're feeling something about the characters, and hopefully, those are things that we can relate to.

Exclusive Video Interview: Taskmaster's Greg Davies & Alex Horne

Greg Davies and Alex HorneRecently, it became a lot easier in the US to stream all things Taskmaster, when at the beginning of the month, Taskmaster Supermax+ streaming service became available. Today the first episode of season nine of the series drops, soon to be followed by the rollout of subsequent seasons, as well as international versions. Having their own streaming service rather than being hosted allowed more control, according to creator and star Alex Horne, who spoke with SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview last week. “Everything's going to be in one place,” said Horne, “no adverts, and all the ones from around the world. So, it's all there, and it just means that we're in control of it. They will still go up on YouTube for free, but it just seems like this way, we don't have to bother with any other middleman.”

Both characters often act as teachers and mentors to their younger colleagues, but they come at it from different angles. We love watching Dr. Charles work with resident Vanessa Taylor, and we asked Platt about their working relationship.

Interview: Hugh Laurie, Will Poulter, & Lucy Boynton Talk Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?

Why Didn't They Ask Evans?Today Britbox released the miniseries Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? The story follows Bobby Jones (Will Poulter) and Lady Frankie Derwent (Lucy Boynton) who become amateur sleuths looking to solve a murder and find the meaning behind the victim’s mysterious last words. The three-episode series is based on the Agatha Christie mystery, with a script by Hugh Laurie, who also directs and executive produces, as well as plays the role of Dr. James Nicholson.

Last week, SciFi Vision talked to Laurie during a press conference with the three performers to promote the adaptation about the difficulties choosing what parts to draw from the original vs adding his own ideas to the story. “That's a tricky one,” said Laurie. “I suppose you just have a sort of instinct that, oh, no, that's not going to work here. Something else needs to happen. We need some other ingredient here that you can't really explain why it is; you just feel it. Sometimes I feel when writing I am sort of partially acting as a reader, just reading rather than writing, and when acting, I feel like I'm watching as much as acting…As a reader, or as a viewer, you just get a sense of, I need something different to happen here. I need some surprise, or I need some alteration of energy or pace or something. And as far as I know, there's no great theory to it. Or if there is, I didn't know what the theory is…I think it's just a sort of an instinct…just sort of a rhythmic thing.”

Exclusive Video Interview: That Dirty Black Bag's Douglas Booth

Douglas BoothDouglas Booth stars as Red Bill in the new eight-part drama series on AMC+, That Dirty Black Bag. The series, which plays homage to the classic spaghetti westerns, tells the story of the clash between the sheriff, Arthur McCoy (Dominic Cooper) and Bill, a bounty hunter known for decapitating his targets and keeping their heads in his bag, because heads weigh less than their bodies.

According to Booth, who really changed his looks for the series, the costume, which was a collaboration, really helped him get into character. “When I put his outfit on, I felt a change came over me,” said Booth in a recent exclusive with SciFi Vision. “I'm quite different in the series from how I am in real life, so something happens there, I’d say.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Tosin Cole Talks 61st Street & Doctor Who

Tosin ColeTonight AMC premieres its new series 61st Street, which follows high school track star Moses Johnson, played by Tosin Cole, who witnesses a shooting during a drug bust and flees, which starts off a chain of events that puts him in the middle of the corrupt Chicago criminal justice system when a police officer ends up dead.

The series highlights a lot of what’s going on in the world today, tacking real world issues of racial profiling, institutional racism, police corruption, and more. Cole feels honored to be in such a series and takes it seriously. “You feel like you’ve been chosen to be a vessel for a bigger discussion,” Cole told SciFi Vision during an exclusive interview. “Obviously there’s a sense of responsibility that you have. I mean, obviously, I’m a black man, so I’m trying to make sure I represent and tell the story the best way I can and as truthful as I can, and, obviously, you want to make sure it’s part of a bigger discussion and a discussion that’s held with empathy…I’m just honored to be a part of that discussion and to make something that effects people in that way and [makes] them think.”

The actor continued that the series is based in Chicago, but the themes are universal.

My wife and I just ended up watching it. I think it was in 2019 we discovered it, maybe 2018. I found it on Britbox, and I just started watching it. They’ve got fourteen seasons of the British one, so there was just a lot of material there. So, we would watch it at night as a way to just decompress…We would just use it as a way to kind of just chill and laugh.”

Yerin Ha and Jen TaylorRecently, the series Halo, which is based on the hugely-popular video game franchise, premiered on Paramount Plus, airing it's third episode yesterday. During a roundtable interview promoting the series, actresses Yerin Ha, who plays Kwan, and Jen Taylor, who plays Cortana, talked to SciFi Vision about what parts they have an easy and more difficult time connecting with.

For Ha, the most difficult part is working with blue and green screens. “I think that was really difficult,” said the actress, “because your imagination has to be on point. They can show you a storyboard and all that kind of stuff, but whatever actually comes to life is so different to how you picture it in your head. [You have] to kind of make sure that that's in check.”
