SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

DVD Review: Teen Wolf: The Complete Season One

By Jamie Ruby

Teen WolfThe Story

When I originally heard that MTV was remaking Teen Wolf, I didn't know what to think. I was glad that the series would be a drama rather than a campy comedy like its predecessor; I don't think that would work very well with today's teen audience.

When it comes to what I watch, I love science fiction, the supernatural, and all that goes with it, including werewolves. I was afraid, however, that created as a show for teens, it might not appeal to an older audience as well. I was glad to be wrong.

The series does have the teenage drama and angst, don't get me wrong, but I didn't feel that it catered only to teen fangirls. It isn't all sappy romance, but thankfully isn't either only about controlling the wolf. It has something for everybody.

"Prometheus:" It’s a Prequel, But Not That Kind

By Daniel Denehy

PrometheusWithout a doubt Prometheus is a prequel to Alien, but only in classification. See, the Alien series is interesting in that the franchise encompasses multiple genres. Alien was a horror movie set in space, Aliens through Alien Resurrection were action movies in space, the AVP movies were parodies that took themselves seriously with sci-fi back story, but Prometheus is a hard science fiction movie. That is to say, unlike its predecessors it was not meant to scare or to excite, it is meant to inspire thought. I'll tell you right now, if you're going to see it and expecting Aliens, you will be sorely disappointed or bored; however, that's not to say there's not monsters and death, just that those take a back seat. No, this film tries to ask the question, "How you would react if you met your god, and he or she wasn't what you expected?"

Eureka 5.8 Review: "In Too Deep"

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright

eurekasigniconDespite the fact that this episode marks the marriage of Carter and Allison, as well as the reveal that Holly is still dying, this felt like something of a step back from the longer-term story arcs. "In Too Deep" is mostly about exploring Carter and Allison's relationship issues against the backdrop of another Eureka disaster. I was a bit disappointed to see Allison devolving into such childish behavior. I almost audibly sighed when the old issues of recent episodes started to crop up again, albeit only from Allison's mouth. In fairness, I suppose there's an argument to be made that Allison isn't totally off the mark, given what we've learned about the Matrix, and the fact that she was in there a good deal longer than Carter was. But I was really hoping that we were past this.

Mad Men 5.13 Review: "The Phantom"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

mad_menAfter four seasons of memorable season finale episodes, each with a major event that shifts the foundation of the series, "The Phantom" takes a different, stranger tack. It seems fitting that a largely introspective season -- one where it has spent the majority of the time exploring the characters' darker impulses and desires -- ends with an introspective finale.
