SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Video Interview: The Sandman's Stephen Fry & Vanesu Samunyai on Learning from Experience & More

Vanesu Samunyai and Stephen FryThe Sandman series finally was released on Netflix, and newcomer Vanesu Samunya, who plays Rose, and veteran actor Stephen Fry, who plays Gilbert, recently talked to the press during a roundtable interview.

With Sandman being the first big production that Samanyal has worked on, we asked her what she learned from the experience and from working with the other actors. “I learned a lot of stuff,” said the actress, “mainly about kind of, I think, everything outside of myself, just being on set for a prolonged period of time and really digesting scripts, especially whole scripts, where there're just so many scenes and so many things that you've got to read. I learned to pace myself and I learned kind of, I guess, how to manage myself, because this was my first opportunity to have a prolonged period of filming. That was the biggest learning curve for me.”

Fry told the site that there is still always more to learn, even for him. “I think you'll get the same answer from actors even older than me,” said Fry, “[which] is that every day is a school day with acting.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Animal Kingdom’s Kevin Csolak and Jasper Polish Tease Series Finale

Kevin Csolak and Jasper PolishTNT’s hit show Animal Kingdom ends its six-season run when the series finale airs tonight. Fans are on edge waiting to see what happens with the criminal Cody family. Each of the boys has an endgame in mind, but J is almost certainly planning to double-cross his uncles. There are also unanswered questions in the flashbacks. Are there more secrets surrounding J’s birth and Julia’s death?

SciFi VIsion caught up with series costars Kevin Csolak (Boardwalk Empire) and Jasper Polish (Force of Nature), who play young Pope and Julia. They wrapped their roles in 2021 and have waited almost a year for the finale – neither has seen the completed episode yet.  “It's just been an insane whirlwind,” Polish told us, “but I'm very happy with how both of our characters have been accepted again into the fan base.”

Neither Csolak nor Polish would give details, but they did tease a satisfying conclusion. “The last episode is really, I think, going to give people the energy and propel them to go back into season one. There're a lot of exciting things and questions that are going to be answered,” teased Csolak. “It's going to make me want to go back and start Animal Kingdom from season one again and just rewatch and see how it all connects.”

Video Interview: Resident Alien's Alice Wetterlund & Levi Fiehler

Alice Wetterlund and Levi FiehlerSyfy recently premiered the back half of the second season of its series Resident Alien. This season on the series, D’arcy (Alice Wetterlund) had been talking to Ben (Levi Fiehler) without Kate (Meredith Garretson)’s knowledge about some of the things that were bothering him about his wife and his marriage. When Kate found out, she understandably became upset. When we spoke with Wetterlund and Fiehler recently during a roundtable, we asked if their friendship could continue to survive in spite of what has happened.

“I mean, Kate's alone in this,” Wetterlund told SciFi Vision. “She's fighting for her marriage; she's fighting for her kid. She's fighting for any semblance of a frickin’ social life. So, D’arcy really effs her over when she finds out that her new best friend is actually just kind of going behind her back and talking to her husband about her. It doesn't feel great, and I completely understand why she would feel that way. It's super inconsiderate. But from D’arcy's point of view, she doesn't really understand the connection between Ben and Kate that much, because she doesn't know Kate. It's like kind of thing when your childhood friend gets married, and you don't really get it…So, until she really invests and begins to understand who Kate is, she's not going to be able to sympathize with Kate.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Adepero Oduye on the Tough Choices Coming in Five Days at Memorial

Adepero OduyeFive Days at Memorial continues this week as the fifth episode drops on Apple TV+’s. The riveting eight-part miniseries tells the real-life story of the staff and patients trapped inside New Orleans’ Memorial Hospital in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.  The fifth episode, “Day Five,” is out today and is the most harrowing hour of an unrelentingly grim series, but it’s truly an excellent hour of television.

In Day Four, the medical staff was beginning to face some very difficult decisions about who to evacuate first – decisions that could mean life or death for the last in line, but the evacuation didn’t happen and people inside and outside the hospital are growing desperate. Patients are beginning to die while exhausted doctors and nurses stand by, unable to offer treatment or relieve their pain. Day Five brings unthinkable questions and impossible choices that ultimately lead to a criminal investigation.

Recently, SciFi Vision spoke with Adepero Oduye, who stars as Karen Wynn, nurse manager of the ICU and also head of Memorial’s ethics committee. Oduye credits the source material (journalist Sheri Fink’s book of the same name) with helping her understand Wynn’s real-life experience. “The book was really helpful in unpacking the ethics of it all,” she told us, “and the ethics committee and what it historically does, particularly in this hospital.”

Video Interview: Neil Gaiman & Allan Heinberg on Bringing The Sandman to Life

Neil Gaiman and Allan HeinbergRecently, Netflix released season one of the highly-anticipated series of The Sandman based on the comics written by Neil Gaiman. To promote the release, television series creators Gaiman and Allan Heinberg, both of whom also serve as executive producers and writers on the show, took part in a round table with the press.

During the interview, the two talked to SciFi Vision about how they decided what to pull versus what to leave out when creating the show. Gaiman was quick to say that he didn’t feel anything was missing from the television series. “I think what fascinates me is there's nothing in those first ten episodes that I miss. There isn't anything where I go, ‘I just wish we got to shoot that little bit that we had to leave out,’ because we were talking all of the time; I was reading the scripts. I was giving notes. There were at least a couple of times when it was even quicker just to say, ‘What if they had this dialog’ and just shunt that over to Allan than it was to try and get Allan to get somebody else to write it and whatever. So, I don't regard it as a thing of, ‘I just wish we had that scene; I wish we shot that scene.’ It's much more a thing of going, ‘I think we've made the television version.’ Sometimes we expand; sometimes we condense.”

Some of those changes, he added, were because of the lack of a narrator in the television series. “We can't stop the action while I talk to you, which I can do in comics,” explained Gaiman, citing Episode Five, “24/7,” as an example. “We take a different path through that story to the one we take in the comic,” he continued, “because we don't have somebody telling you what's going on inside everybody's head, and because we don't have that, then we're doing this with drama, and we're interacting, making it essentially a stage play. So, if we have the stage play version of that, how would you do that?”

Exclusive: Resident Alien’s Elizabeth Bowen on Deputy Liv's Confidence

***The following interview contains light spoilers for tonight's episode***

Elizabeth BowenTonight, an all-new episode of Resident Alien premieres on Syfy. This season, with the introduction of Detective Lena Torres (Nicola Correia-Damude), Deputy Liv Baker (Elizabeth Bowen) is getting ignored even more by the sheriff (Corey Reynolds). When SciFi Vision recently spoke with Bowen, she said that her character was starting to gain ground with the sheriff, but it comes in fits and starts. In our most recent interview with the actress, we asked her if it is a matter of confidence with Liv.

“She may have some insecurities around not being listened to by people,” explained Bowen to SciFi Vision, “But I do believe she very much has the courage of her convictions. She's very confident in her ability to parse information, I think, and puts everything in the right box. So, I would say the confidence issue is more in just having to maybe speak up on how she feels, even though you don't want to bring too much emotion into your job. She has to sort of have the confidence in the fact that eventually people will listen.”

That being said, Liv moves ahead with investigating without the sheriff in tonight’s episode. “She's quite sure that some of her suppositions, some of her theories, have legs. So, she does decide to go up with Asta (Sara Tomko) and basically confirm what she's pretty sure she already knows to be fact,” teased the actress.

Exclusive: Resident Alien's Sara Tomko on Asta's Guilt and More

***Note the following interview contains light spoilers for tonight's episode***

Sara TomkoTonight Syfy airs an all-new episode of Resident Alien. Recently on the series, Asta (Sara Tomko) killed a man to protect her alien friend Harry (Alan Tudyk), and she’s been dealing with the guilt. Can she forgive herself? “I think that that is going to be seen and felt by her for a little bit,” Tomko told SciFi Vision during an exclusive interview last week. “Forgiveness is so important, especially with self; that's one of the hardest things for us to do as humans is to forgive ourselves.”

Guilt and pain is part of being human, and in a recent episode, Harry took away Asta’s memory of the shooting to remove her pain without her permission, but a lot of it was selfish, because he didn’t like the way she was acting. He just didn’t comprehend what was happening, according to the actress. “I don't think he even understands what he did was wrong at all…I think he just wanted it to stop. I don't think he even thought twice about asking for permission consent or that she would be upset by it. In his mind, he did a good thing.”

She thinks, however, that it was innocent. “I don't think there was any malice or ill will,” said Tomko.

Video Interview: Corey Reynolds & Elizabeth Bowen on Torres Affecting the Status Quo

Corey Reynolds and Eilzabeth BowenRecently the cast of Resident Alien was joined by Nicola Correia-Damude, as Detective Lena Torres, when she came to Patience to investigate the murder of the man whom Asta (Sara Tomko) killed to save Harry (Alan Tudyk). Corey Reynolds, who plays Sheriff Mike Thompson, and Elizabeth Bowen, who plays Deputy Liv Baker, recently talked to SciFi Vision during a roundtable about how Torres' arrival in the town has upset the status quo between the two characters. “I think she comes in no holds barred, business as usual,” said Bowen of Torres. “Whether she is just oblivious to it or she just doesn't care, she completely upsets the apple cart between the two of us, and I don't even think…Sheriff Mike realizes how much she's upset the applecart. He's just thinking more I think about his reaction to her, like, ‘Who is this person?’ Whereas Liv is like, ‘No one's paying attention to me. No one's listening to me. Everyone's forgetting about me.’ I mean, you'll literally see sometimes where they actually forget she's even in the room with them, and that is incredibly upsetting to poor Liv.”

Reynolds felt the same. “I think in a lot of ways Mike meets his match,” added the actor. “Deputy Liv is his match in one way, but she's more flies with honey than detective Torres…I think in some ways, she sees herself very similar to I think how he sees himself, except I don't think she has the insecurities that Mike has. I think she's presenting as competent as she actually is.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Aaron Ashmore on the End of Locke & Key

Aaron AshmoreRecently the third and final season of Locke & Key premiered on Netflix and star Aaron Ashmore, who plays Duncan, spoke with SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview.

This season is lighter for Duncan. “He's planning his wedding,” he explained to SciFi Vision. “He's going to get married. At this point, I think, in the story, everything sort of settled down, and Tyler (Connor Jessup) is off kind of finding himself, but things have settled down and life is moving on. I think Duncan's very happy to have Brian (Milton Barnes) back and very happy to be getting married after all the craziness that happened in season two.”

Ashmore also talked about what he himself got out of working on the series. “Much like a lot of the other shows that I really enjoyed working on, I love the family element to it,” said the actor. “Obviously, there is literally a family with the Lockes, but also all of the other characters, how they all band together…how everybody sort of works together in this common goal…The shows that I work on and things that I like, that's usually what it comes down to are these amazing [characters] working together, but also the people that sort of bring it all together. That's what I would say I enjoyed the most out of it.”

John Cameron MitchellThe Sandman, based on the comics series written by Neil Gaiman, recently premiered on Netflix and follows the Sandman (Tom Sturridge), aka Dream, who rules over the realm of Dreaming.  After being captured for a century, both his realm and the real world become damaged, and he must go on a quest to recover what was stolen from him and mend both worlds. During his quest he meets Rose Walker (Vanesu Samunyai), who has a connection to him that neither of them can escape.

John Cameron Mitchell plays the part of Hal Carter, the drag queen who dreams of being a star on Broadway, but currently runs a B&B, which is where he meets and mentors Rose. Mitchell recently talked to SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about working on the series.

The actor had actually worked with Gaiman before becoming involved with the series. “Neil and I are friends,” said Mitchell, “and I adapted one of his stories for film, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, so [Hal] was a kind of instant offer, which was very nice to have.”

Mitchell said that he is excited to watch full series and talk to Gaiman about it. “I really had a blast…I haven't talked to Neil yet, because I just want to wait until I finish it, but he must be very proud, because he's had a lot of things adapted of his work, and…this one he had a lot of control over, and I think he would be very happy.”
