SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive Video Interview: Becoming Elizabeth’s Creative Team on Bringing the Series to Life

George Ormond and Anya ReissRecently Starz premiered Becoming Elizabeth, the story of Elizabeth Tudor as a teenager, long before she ascended to the throne of England. To promote the series, SciFi Vision talked to creator and executive producer Anya Reiss and executive producer George Ormond about bringing the story to life. The two were drawn to telling a different part of the history of Queen Elizabeth than has been done before.

“[When] Anya and I first started talking about it, when we first came across this part of the history, we just couldn't believe that it hadn't been explored before, because it's an extraordinary story,” Ormond explained. “Really, it's a roller coaster for Elizabeth, for her two siblings, Mary (Romola Garai) and Edward (Oliver Zetterström) and all the people around them, but it also felt like a really contemporary story that explores the relationship between Elizabeth and Thomas (Tom Cullen) and explores power and a really complicated relationship between a young woman who feels she's in control, but actually isn't really in control. It felt like...one of the things that really helped to make Elizabeth who we think of when we think of Elizabeth the icon.”

“I think that's what drew me to it,” agreed Reiss. “Every bit of the history we found out...suddenly all the things I knew about her made sense from this earlier story. So, that felt really exciting to kind of tell her story backwards, where it's all the things that happened to her that make her who she is.”

Exclusive Interview: Emma McDonald on Creating Bella Sway for Moonhaven

Emma McDonaldThe series Moonhaven, which comes to AMC on Thursday, takes place 100 years in the future and follows Bella Sway, played by Emma McDonald, a cargot pilot who ends up stranded in the idyllic community of Moonhaven on the Moon after being accused of a crime.

McDonald loved everything about Bella right away. “She's so cool,” the actress told SciFi Vision during a recent exclusive interview. “She flies a spaceship. She's fantastic with her fists, with her mind. She's funny…There's not really anything that didn't draw me to her.”

At the beginning, Bella doesn’t fit in well with those on the Moon. “She fits in reluctantly,” explained McDonald. “In fact, she stands apart from the rest of the gang. She's an Earther. She has fought in many wars. She's a rebel. She's a bit of a loner, but she wouldn't describe herself in that way…She kind of watches from a distance.”

The actress did say, however, that Bella is “fiercely loyal” if she lets you into her inner circle, which is what happens when she teams up with the local detective, Paul Sarno (Dominic Monaghan), to find the truth, when she finds herself with a connection to a murder victim.

Exclusive Video Interview: Calis, Holmstrom, Clarke, & Elms Preview SkyMed, Now on Paramount+

SkyMedSkyMed, which premiered in the US yesterday on Paramount Plus, follows the lives of flight nurses and pilots who work medical rescue on the air ambulances in Northern Canada. SciFi Vision recently talked to cast members to promote the series.

The stars of SkyMed were given quick crash courses in their respective characters’ fields, according to Natasha Calis, who plays Hayley. “It was really fun,” the actress told the site. “We all had different types of training. As soon as we landed in, in Winnipeg...we had medical training, where we were divided up into the nurses and pilots, so that the nurses had medical training, which was a full day, and the pilots had pilot training...We actually all got to go up in planes, which was really fun, and the pilots sort of sat more at the front and watched what everybody was doing.”

Interview: Going Dark with the Cast of Lifetime's Flowers in the Attic: The Origin

Flowers in the Attic: The OriginLifetime’s hotly anticipated Flowers in the Attic: The Origin is here, and fans of VC Andrews’ gothic family saga will love every minute of over-the-top drama! The limited series airs on consecutive Saturdays in July, starting tonight. You can also also catch encore performances Sunday at 10 pm and next Saturday, July 16, at 6 pm, right before the second episode airs. It’s also available on the Lifetime app and mylifetime.com.

Lifetime last brought Andrews’ bestselling Flowers in the Attic to the screen back in 2015. The stylish new series is adapted from the fifth novel, Garden of Shadows, a prequel that tells of bright, optimistic Olivia Winfield’s transformation into the cold, cruel old woman who imprisons her grandchildren in the attic.

In the first episode, Olivia (Jemima Rooper, The Girlfriend Experience), falls for handsome millionaire Malcolm Foxworth (Max Irons, Condor). After they wed, Malcolm reveals his true self and Olivia resigns herself to a lonely, violent life at creepy Foxworth Hall. Things seem to be looking up when Malcolm’s jovial father (Kelsey Grammer, Frasier) shows up with a very young new wife (Alana Bowden, Ride), but the good vibes don’t last. Over four chapters, Olivia encounters increasingly dark secrets (we’re talking obsession, betrayal, sexual assault, incest) and constructs a web of lies to protect her children, her reputation and, most importantly, the massive family fortune.

Interview: Catherine Bell & Tom Stevens Talk Jailbreak Lovers, Tonight on Lifetime

Jailbreak LoversTonight, Lifetime premieres the film Jailbreak Lovers, based on a true story. The movie follows Toby, played by Catherine Bell, a woman who always followed the rules, until one day it all changes. After losing her job, Toby starts a non-profit organization at a local prison to rehabilitate abused dogs. There she meets inmate John, played by Tom Stevens, and falls in love. After hatching a plan, Toby helps John break out of prison by smuggling him out in a dog crate, and the two go on the run.

Bell and Stevens recently talked to the press about working on the film, telling SciFi Vision about what they pulled from the characters’ real-life counterparts versus what they were able to add creatively. For Bell, there was more to draw from “[I] had a lot of interviews,” said the actress, “and I watched all the ones that I could find of Toby. Obviously, I don’t look anything like her, so I gave that up quickly, but there’s an essence to her that I tried to get. You know, just she’s got that little bit of the Kansas accent and just this sweet woman who really just was totally taken by surprise by this guy, and it just completely altered the course of her life.  But, yeah, it was a lot of fun trying to become this woman who is very different than myself.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Becoming Elizabeth's Tom Cullen & Jessica Raine

Tom Cullen and Jessica RaineBecoming Elizabeth, which recently premiered on Starz, tells the story of young Elizabeth Tudor (Alicia von Rittberg), before she rose to the throne. Although the story of the queen is well known, this is something new, according to actor Tom Cullen, who plays the character of Thomas Seymour. “[T]o be honest,” the actor told SciFi Vision, “this is a part of the history that I didn't know anything about, really, and I can't believe it. There's so much out there about Elizabeth, the first one of the most iconic characters in history, but nothing really about this period in her life, which I think is so informative as the person that she became. It was a real honor to kind of get into that and get a chance to tell that part of her story.”

There's, there's still a lot to mine. I think that the seeds that we planted, whether they're seeds of discord or seeds of growth, will come into fruition. We will definitely see what happens to them. So, I think that that'll be deeply gratifying to our fans, because I was just playing the role, playing a part, [and] I was really gratified with the journey. So, look out for that for sure.”
