Mad Men 5.11 Review: "The Other Woman"

It's all glitz and glamour until someone brings something distasteful up to the surface. When that happens, it has a way of rotting whatever gets in the way. All throughout this episode, I felt as if the walls of Jericho were falling all around the characters. The firm is not flush with money so they have to fight tooth-and-nail for any account they can get their hands on. They do try, befitting what Don said in his speech to rally the troops in the previous episode, but there are costs to getting that golden goose.

"The episode has dramatically exceeded our expectations," said series showrunner David Benioff in an interview with Entertainment Weekly recently. Instead of going with their original plan to frame the entire Battle of the Blackwater from the perspective of Cersei and Sansa, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss made the case to HBO that they just HAD to show that battle, and they'd need more money to do it. Surprisingly, HBO agreed to raise the budget significantly. I knew all of this before the episode had aired, and I'd been unable to keep myself from watching the promo, but none of this prepared me for what I was about to experience. This was TV history in the making.

The final episode of Awake didn't answer the bulk of the questions I had coming into it, least of all which world depicted throughout the season was the "real" world, but the last section presents a neat open-ended befitting of the series. It gives rise to more questions that the series unfortunately will not have the chance to answer. What we got in these thirteen episodes that varied somewhat in quality was sometimes a meditation on what it's like to mourn the loss of a loved one and also a standard police procedural.

Battleship has been receiving a lot of guff from critics since even before it was released. A natural reaction for them I think, given that the previews make it look like the fourth Transformers movie. A series that has polarized movie viewers like none other I've seen. (Since it is partially relevant, and if it's important to you, I enjoy that series. Are they flawless, no, but they are more than enjoyable action flicks.) However, though Battleship may look like Transformers, it is not; it's Independence Day, another big time movie critic punching bag that I enjoy.

It was obvious from the beginning of the season of American Idol that Phillip Phillips had something special. The twenty-one year old from Leesburg, Georgia, had a unique voice that separated him from the competition and helped him stand out early on. Every week fans waited to see what he would do, as he always made the songs his own. Phillips has known from the beginning the kind of artist he would become; often ignoring advice in order to stay true to himself.
On Wednesday Phillips was crowned the winner of season eleven of American Idol.
On Thursday the singer talked to the digital media about his experiences on American Idol and the future.

"Awake:" The Finale Will Blow Your Mind

Not since Lost has a show taken me on a journey that made me question the story at every turn. The complexity of Awake is one of the best parts of the show, in my opinion. Through the whole season I was guessing and making theories about what was really going on; which reality was real, if any. At the end of the journey I'm still left with questions, though surprisingly still quite satisfied at the end.

Person of Interest 1.23 Review: "Firewall"

"Person of Interest" brings its freshman season to a close with another stellar episode. And it did it by taking its established formula and layering in the onging elements it's been building all season. Rather that a special event finale, it becomes an enhanced episode that ramps up the tension to a fever pitch. While some questions are answered, some plot threads are closed, it all drives to a conclusion that was both satisfying and leaves you begging for more. It's going to be a long summer waiting to hear the other side of that phone call.
