SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive Video Interview: The Orville: New Horizons' Scott Grimes and J. Lee

***The following interview (specifically the video portion) contains slight spoilers for 3.03***

The OrvilleToday, the third episode of Seth MacFarlane’s epic space adventure, The Orville: New Horizons dropped on Hulu. Recently, SciFi Vision spoke exclusively with the cast about the new season and what’s to come for the crew of the U.S.S. Orville.

Scott Grimes, who plays the character of Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, talked about his character maturing a bit this season. “[He] wants to probably settle down, find love, and become a captain someday, I would think,” teased the actor. “So, you're just going to see a side of Gordon that coincides with the show getting a little bit more serious. He's going to help out more and be there for people instead of just saying some kind of goofy thing once in a while, and I'm proud to have him evolve in that way.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Dark Winds’ Creator and Director on Bringing the Series to Life

Graham Roland and Chris EyreTonight, the new series Dark Winds premieres on AMC and AMC+, with the first two episodes available on the latter. Set in 1971, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) as he investigates a series of seemingly unrelating crimes. The series is based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman. Chris Eyre, who is a director on the series and is also an executive producer actually worked on adaptations of the book series previously, but this time is different. “I think this is the first time that it feels like it's crystallized into something appropriate to the time and the place,” said Eyre. “Graham [Roland]’s pilot script was amazing, and it spoke to just the contradictions and the beauty of the story and the characters.”

Roland, who is not only also an executive producer in addition to writer on the series but credited as creator, said he hadn’t read the books prior to receiving one from his agent. “That was my first introduction to it,” said Roland. “Then, I was completely taken, not only with the idea of doing a project that was Native centric, there was [also] no white character bringing you into the Native world. It started through the Native character’s POV, and then you experience the world to their point of view. [Hillerman]’s writing was so immersive, the sense of place that you got from his writing, as a writer and trying to adapt it, it gave me a great place to start from, because there was so much there. His books were so rich with detail. There was so much there for me to draw from.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Becoming Elizabeth’s Alicia von Rittberg on Playing the Larger-Than-Life Historical Figure

Alicia von RittbergBecoming Elizabeth, which premieres today on Starz, follows orphaned teenager Elizabeth Tudor before she takes the throne of England. The future queen is obviously well known, but the series explores a part of her life that hasn’t been seen before. This helped Alicia von Rittberg to play her own version of the character easier. “It's just your point of view,” the actress told SciFi Vision. “That's all we can do as actresses…I think it was very helpful to play her in her younger years. There wasn't that much comparison, because that part of her life wasn't told before.”

Was it daunting to play such a larger than life historical figure? “I think you want to approach it with all your respect, and you want to do a justice as well,” said the actress. “I am German, and I didn't want anyone British go, ‘Oh, my God, what did you do with our queen?’ So, I think that that I was even more careful and even more considerate taking on that role.”

Exclusive Interview: For All Mankind's Krys Marshall Talks Role Models & Representation

Krys MarshallFor All Mankind is in its third and final season, which is already proving to be a huge hit. Since the series began, we have seen our characters not only grow on the show, but also become incredible role models for the young people watching.

This is something that is particularly important to Krys Marshall, who plays Danielle. In an exclusive interview with SciFi Vision, she revealed that she is thrilled to be able to show what an astronaut could look like. “When you're able to see examples of what it's like,” said the actress, “to see that a scientist is not just a fluffy old white dude with the gray mop and a big mustache and a white coat - a scientist looks like me. An astronaut looks like me. So, through television and through storytelling, when we redefine what an astronaut looks like, I think that we help inject into the conversation and into society a shift in what the norm is. So, that way, God willing, there are ten, twelve-year-old kids who think to themselves, ‘Maybe this is an option for me. Maybe I will take more biology classes; maybe I will major in geology. Maybe I will become an engineer.’ That's really exciting for me, and I take that responsibility as a role model very seriously.”

Review: Supernatural Romance First Kill, Now Streaming

First KillIn Netflix’s new series First Kill, high school student Juliette Fairmont (Sarah Catherine Hook) is feeling the physical changes in herself more and more each day, taking pills of blood to forestall her symptoms of bloodlust, which won’t stop until she finally makes her first kill, the one thing she does not want to do. Her life becomes more complicated when she develops a crush on new student Calliope “Cal” Burns (Imani Lewis), however, unbeknownst to her, Calliope is from a family of hunters who will stop at nothing to kill all monsters, including vampires. It’s a new take on the classic story of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet (perhaps here Juliet and Juliet), but with a supernatural twist.

As much as the basic plot of the forbidden love story has been done before, I did find it enjoyable. Hook and Lewis are believable in their respective roles and they do have chemistry. The supporting cast I also thought was chosen well. The friendship between Juliette and Ben (Jonas Dylan Allen) I thought balanced the romance of the story in a positive way. I also liked the dynamics of the Fairmont family, and the vampire lore, at least to me, was fairly original and interesting. Also standing out were the scenes between Juliette’s mother, Margot (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Calliope’s mother, Talia (Aubin Wise).

Exclusive Video Interview: Now & Then Cast Yazpik, Cardona, de Tavira, Verdú, & Villamil

Now & ThenThe latest ep of Now and Then was huge! Episode five, titled “Face to Face,” finally delivered some big developments in the blackmail plot – we learned what Daniela did and why, who else is in on the scheme, and who’s got the money. Meanwhile, Sofia continues to ruin Marcos’ life, and poor Pedro has way bigger problems than blackmail.

Last month, SciFi Vision spoke with costars Manolo Cardona, who plays Marcos, and José María Yazpik, who plays Pedro, about their characters’ seemingly perfect lives.

“It's pretty sad when you're not living the life that you plan to,” said Yazpik. Pedro “loves his family but he wishes he could be doing something else, or he could be living another life. So, that's probably the worst scenario in which he is living right now. But it's complex, because he's happy as well; he's just not fulfilled. Which happens to many people. So, we'll just have to wait and see the decisions that Pedro will take in the future.”

Blu-ray Review: Eraser: Reborn - Out Now

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Eraser: RebornBased on the blockbuster hit from 1996, Eraser: Reborn arrives on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD today. The action film stars Dominic Sherwood as U.S. Marshal Mason Pollard who specializes in “erasing people” – faking the deaths of those entering witness protection and erasing their digital fingerprint. When crime boss’ wife Rina Kimara (Jacky Lai) refuses to go into witness protection, Pollard proves to her she is in danger, and she reluctantly agrees to flee to Cape Town, South Africa. Things do not go as planned, however, when Pollard realizes he has been double-crossed, and they are chased by assassins who will stop at nothing to erase them permanently.

Eraser: Reborn is a mixed bag, although, overall, I had a positive experience watching it. The action keeps the movie flowing with a few comedic moments interspersed. However, it is an action film, don’t expect a futuristic science fiction movie. I admit, I don’t remember much about the original, so it might have been similar, but other than the very brief mention of a bit of tech that was barely utilized, it just felt like a run of the mill action movie about marshals protecting an asset. That’s not to say that it wasn’t enjoyable, because it was; it just wasn’t quite what I expected.

Exclusive Video Interview: The Orville: New Horizons' Jessica Szohr and Anne Winters

The OrvilleYesterday, season three of The Orville: New Horizons premiered on Hulu. The epic space adventure from Seth MacFarlane follows the crew of the S.S. Orville as they travel across the far reaches of the galaxy.

New this season to the crew is Ensign Charles Burke, played by Anne Winters, who does not get along with everyone at first, because she refuses to accept Issac (Mark Jackson), the ship’s science and engineering officer from the non-biological Kaylon-1 race. “I'm coming in new completely,” the actress told SciFi Vision, “and I love my introduction to the season. I think it really is a good first episode to show what is going to be coming this entire season. I have a lot of hatred towards the Kaylon. The journey that she kind of takes this season and learning different things as a new character on the set, not only with Isaac, but just the different characters, I think is really fun to play. I'm excited for people to see it.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Adrianne Palicki & Penny Johnson Jerald Talk The Orville: New Horizons, Premiering Today

The OrvilleToday, the third season of Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville: New Horizons comes to Hulu. The epic space adventure follows the crew of the S.S. Orville as they explore the galaxy.

One of the main relationships in the series is with Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane), who commands the S.S. Orville, and Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), his ex-wife. Palicki recently spoke with SciFi Vision about where their relationship is headed this season. “I mean, I can only tell you so much,” teased the actress. “…I will just say it will evolve. But the wonderful thing to watch these two is to see that they’ve become such dear friends and dependent on each other. They lean on each other a lot, and you see that more than ever, I think, in this particular season. So, it will evolve in one way or the other.”
