SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

"Some Guy Who Kills People" - DVD Review

Some Guy Who Kills PeopleWhen I first received the DVD to review, I wasn't sure what to think with it's title, but don't let that deter you. In retrospect, the title actually fits the mood of the film.

Some Guy Who Kills People
is partially a horror movie - it does have murder and blood and guts - but it's also a great character driven story. The star of the film is Kevin Corrigan, who plays the character of Ken Boyd. Boyd is 34 and still living at home with his mother (Karen Black), working as an ice cream parlor attendant. Boyd is very quiet and withdrawn - he's returned from a mental institution after severe mental trauma from being beaten and tortured by a group of high school kids. He releases tension by his comic art, where he can live out his dark fantasies of revenge.

The Newsroom 1.1: "We Just Decided To"

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys

newsroom_iconFrom Clinton Administration officials in “The West Wing” to SNL staffers in “Studio 60”, Aaron Sorkin’s behind-the-scenes dramas have long inspired parlor games about who his characters are based on. I’ve never found the game particularly relevant, given the alternate Sorkin-verse he creates around them. However, the show that cleaved closest to our reality, and the most relevant predecessor to “The Newsroom”, was “Sports Night,” with Casey McCall and Dan Rydell seen as stand-ins for SportsCenter’s Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann.

FNL's Gaius Charles joins "Necessary Roughness"

By Karen Moul

Gaius CHarlesThe New York Hawks have a new wide receiver this season. Gaius Charles has joined the cast of Necessary Roughness as Damon Razor, a rookie who – if he can get his personal issues in order – just might give franchise player TK a run for his money.

Charles spoke with Scifi Vision about what it was like getting back on the field. Best known as Smash Williams on the high school football drama Friday Night Lights, he put that experience to work for him on Necessary Roughness.

“Returning to the field to portray Damon Razor,” he said, “the learning curve was much shorter in terms of feeling comfortable in the pads, feeling comfortable on the field.

“Some actors haven’t had to put on the pads and really get in the physical space of their character. That was not a challenge for me. It was good to have that experience because it has helped me get into a role that much easier.”

But there’s more to the role than just football.

Eureka 5.10 Review: "The Honeymooners"

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright

eurekasigniconWell, for better or for worse, "Eureka" has only four more episodes to go in its final season; and that includes the episode that SyFy ordered at the last minute to make up for cancelling (or "not ordering") the shortened sixth season. The fifth season should not have to bear the burden of being the last, and it's hard to imagine how a single episode could satisfyingly end a story that was originally planned to span six episodes. But this is what we're stuck with, so a certain amount of disappointment with this season was inevitable.

Erica Dasher Talks "Jane By Design"

By Lynn Tackitt

Erica DasherOf all the new shows that have made their debut over this last season Jane By Design surprised me the most. At first it looked like a typical teenage show with a little fashion thrown in, but half way through the pilot episode you see it is so much more than that.

Sometimes funny and sometimes serious but all the time entertaining. A big part of that comes from newcomer Erica Dasher. A wonderful actress who can make you find yourself cheering her on in her two-sided coin of her life, and sometimes groaning in disappointment along with her when something just doesn't work out.

Dasher talked about Jane By Design with the new season plot line, the cast members, and what it's like to film on the weekly schedule of her hit television show. Always pleasant to speak with, she seems to have a laugh always on the edge of her conversation and she is just as wonderful to talk to in her interviews as her character on the show. Maybe it should be "Erica By Design?"

Falling Skies 2.3 Review: "Compass"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

Falling-Skies-iconWell, my concerns that the 2nd Massachusetts was going to stay at the airport and the plot stagnating while at that location were short-lived. The first season had the survivors holed up in the school for some time and that's really what happened to a large degree. Keeping the camp mobile is the best thing that can be done for this show, despite how expensive it must be to constantly change sets.

Lost Girl 2.10 Review: "Raging Fae"

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumbFollowing last episode's stellar effort was always going to be a feat. Sadly, "Raging Fae" doesn't manage to rise to the occasion, but that's as much because the show decided to take a different tactic with this episode and create a smaller, more character-centric instalment that delivers a solid A-story and some of the best writing and acting we've seen yet for Bo.
