On tonight’s all-new episode of Quantum Leap, “A Decent Proposal,” Ben (Raymond Lee) leaps into the body of a female bounty hunter in 1980’s Los Angeles. Last week SciFi Vision spoke with director Rachel Talalay (Doctor Who,The Flash) in an exclusive interview about creating the time period and some of the unique parts of the experience. 

The 80s was a time Talalay was happy to be recreating. “That's what's great about time travel shows, you never know what you're going to get,” the director told SciFi Vision. “So, it was really nice to get something that I was comfortable with.” 

 “I was such a passionate punk,” she added. “…I remember discovering the Go Go's and giving it to my kid sister as the coolest pop punk. I was in the Whisky a Go Go in the early 80s, so it just felt like a complete fit.” 

This, however, did present a problem. “The challenge, of course, was that all of these things that I love about the 80s LA, many have disappeared,” Talalay explained, saying that she went to her own photographs. “The first time I visited LA was in '81, so I pulled out some photographs that I took of landmarks from '81. Of course, they're not there anymore.” 

Last Sunday, The Walking Dead returned for its final eight episodes. There has been a lot of tension among those in the Commonwealth, because of what Sebastian (Teo Rapp-Olsson), Governor Pamela Milton (Laila Robins)’s son, is being accused of. In last week’s episode, Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) talked to Pamela about what was transpiring, seemingly giving her the benefit of the doubt that she didn’t know everything her son was involved in. During a recent roundtable, SciFi Vision talked to Matsuura about Yumiko’s true feelings on the matter. “What was so disarming about Pamela is that she also has these moments of vulnerability where she'll share with me her feelings about Sebastian,” the actress told the site. “That can be quite kind of discombobulating for two women who are supposed to be in this professional relationship. I think I'm afforded this sort of privileged time with Pamela behind closed doors that not many people get to see. It's not as straightforward as you might think. I think that's part of what makes the storyline so interesting is that it's not that Pamela's just like this out and out there baddie…It's more nuanced than that. I think the way Laila plays Pamela is that you can see the struggle. You can see her belief in this system, and Yumiko has belief in a system; I want to believe in laws and a system. So, I can respect that point of view, and that's familiar ground to me. That's why I think the scene is interesting to play, because it's like two really smart, intelligent human beings, who are also very, very good at twisting words and manipulating things.”

Tonight, the first of the final eight episodes of The Walking Dead premieres on AMC. SciFi Vision recently spoke to members of the cast during a roundtable interview about what their characters taught them.

For Josh McDermitt, who plays Eugene, it was his selflessness. “I think Eugene has taught me to be less selfish,” the actor told SciFi Vision, “just in my own life. Not that I've [ever] felt like I was a very selfish person, but just to see how Eugene really puts others before him. I was like, ‘Yeah, that's kind of how we should all be living.’”

“I'm strong enough to do a lot more than I give myself credit for,” said Margot Bingham, who plays Eugene’s girlfriend, Max.

Paola Lazaro, who plays Princess, learned some valuable skills from her character. “For me,” said the actress, “I think this character taught me to be at peace with myself and to kind of love myself, but also to use the pain of the past to move you forward and for survival. Use those skills that you learned in the past, dealing with trauma and stuff like that to move you forward in this world as a shield.”

Let the Right One, which premieres Sunday on Showtime, follows Eleanor Kane (Madison Taylor Baez), who ten years prior was turned into a vampire and thus stuck forever as a twelve-year-old, only able to leave at night. Her father, Mark (Demián Bichir) does his best to continue to provide her with the blood she needs, but things become more challenging when they become entangled in the lives of those around them, including Isiah Cole (Ian Foreman) who wants to be friends with Eleanor.

The ten-episode series was inspired by the original Swedish novel and film of the same name. When adapting the story for the new series, showrunner and executive producer Andrew Hinderaker started with the connections between the characters. “The [original] movie is not only one of, for me, the best horror movies ever made, but probably the most moving, and that's how I always begin, with an emotional connection,” he told SciFi Vision during a recent TCA panel. “I think that, in the film, the relationship between those two children…is just astonishingly beautiful and poignant and poetic, and so there's an opportunity to use that as an aesthetic inspiration.”

“What's sort of extraordinary about the film is it also felt like there was real creative space to build upon what was already there,” he added. “So, for example, there's sort of a small relationship between the character, the child vampire, and her caretaker, who fetches her blood. For me, personally, as a person, as an artist, I was really interested in exploring addiction and exploring what a parent will do for a child when they are struggling with addiction. It felt like this incredible gift to take what was in the foundations and in the sort of seeds of the film and create an entirely new story that would be centered around Demián's character Mark and Madison's character Eleanor and explore the lengths that this father would go to keep his daughter alive.”

Last week, Call Me Kat premiered on Fox, and SciFi Vision recently caught up with the cast during a roundtable interview to talk about season three and what’s to come, especially in their love lives. According to Cheyenne Jackson, who plays Max, his character is in the middle of having an existential crisis this season, and he’s eager for it. “They've kind of pitched me what's going to happen throughout the course of his year,” said the actor. “I can't get super into the weeds on that one, but there's some major life stuff happening that me, Cheyenne, as a dad, as a husband, as a performer, I'm really excited to get to jump into, stuff I've never been able to address, and stuff I've never been able to play. Of all the things I've been able to do, I'm getting to be able to do some pretty amazing subject matter. So, definitely the love life and all that plays a part of it.”

“Phil falls in love with a wonderful female impersonator that he goes to see named Queen Dicktoria,” said Leslie Jordon of his character to SciFi Vision. “It's John Griffin, who's just such a wonderful actor, and he plays Jaylen, who's Queen Dicktoria out of drag, and then I meet him out of drag and fall for him then, too. So, it's a really cute storyline.”

“In all my 40 years in working, I don't think I've ever had a storyline where I had a love interest,” the performer added. “I'm just the funny guy who comes with the zinger. So, it really throws me. I read that and go, ‘Oh my gosh! Are we going to kiss?! I've never kissed in front of a camera.’ It's just so well written.”

Tonight The CW premieres their new series Walker Independence, which is set in the late 1800s and is an origin story of the series Walker, which currently airs on the network. In Independence, Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara)’s husband is murdered in front of her before they can journey out West where he was set to be the new sheriff of Independence, Texas. After Abby is rescued by Apache tracker Calian (Justin Johnson Cortez), she makes her way to Independence to find that Tom Davidson (Greg Hovanessian), who she has reasons to believe is not a good man, has taken over the job her husband would have had. While in the town, Abby runs into thief and con artist Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr), who she decides to align with, to help her seek justice and uncover her husband’s murderer.

Taking place in the late 1800s, the series boasts elaborate costumes, which help to inform their characters. “We have the most amazing wardrobe department,” star McNamara told SciFi Vision during a recent panel with the cast and creatives of the series. “Marian Toy is our brilliant costume designer, and she has taken such care to make sure everything is as historically accurate as possible.” The actress also talked about how wearing such a costume, including a corset, does really change the way you walk and “exist in space.”

Hovanessian added that they get so used to wearing the costumes that it feels odd to rehearse and block in street clothes.

Premiering tonight on Syfy, Reginald the Vampire, based on the novel series Fat Vampire by Johnny B. Truant, follows Reginald, played by Jacob Batalon, who is transformed into a vampire and doesn’t fit into the expected mold of the beautiful and fit undead. Becoming a vampire only adds to the unlikely hero’s problems, but he soon discovers he has some new hidden talents in the process.

When attacked, Reginald is turned by Maurice (Mandela Van Peebles), and his maker becomes not only his mentor, but also his friend. “I would say it's probably the most important relationship that's in the show, only because it's sort of the whole reason why Reginald’s in this mess,” said star Batalon to SciFi Vision during a recent roundtable. “Mandela, and I absolutely wanted to make it a point that we are absolutely brothers. We are absolutely close, and that chemistry really plays really well in the show. But it is detrimental; the whole story is beginning because of the relationship. So, I would say that that's the hardest relationship we had to work on.”

Batalon not only is the star of the series, but for the first time, he also is a co-executive producer on the project. “I think, for me, they gave me a lot of reign over what I did for my character,” he told the site. “They just let me in on all the all the sort of messages we wanted to convey and the meetings that we have behind closed doors and sort of the understanding of what it means to push a certain image in a certain story and help that inform my performance.”

Chucky, or should we say Chuckies, are returning to SyFy on October 5th. The killer dolls inhabited by the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (voiced by Brad Dourif) are out for revenge against several targets. In the first season, we saw the possessed Good Guys toy go to war with a group of teens and his former wife Tiffany (voiced by Jennifer Tilly). The groundbreaking series not only gave us loads of gory kills the franchise is known for but also managed to be incredibly inclusive on a meaningful level. Season two looks to continue that trend while also introducing new characters and the return of Glen and Glenda.

We had the privilege to talk to the cast and Chucky’s creator Don Mancini along with the series’ stars Zachary Arthur, Bjorgvin Arnarson, and Bella Higginbotham about the upcoming season. Chucky season two premieres on SyFy and USA Network tonight. Check out the interview below!

Reginald the Vampire, which premieres tomorrow on Syfy, follows Reginald (Jacob Batalon), who having been turned into the undead in a world of beautiful and fit vampires, doesn’t belong. The unlikely hero still deals with human issues like crushes and bullies, discovering his undead life is just as complicated as his previous one.

The story is based on the novel series Fat Vampire by Johnny B. Truant, and according to showrunner and executive producer Harley Peyton, the world he invented creates a dichotomy that makes the show different. “[Vampires] seek a kind of perfection that's all about beauty,” he explained during a recent TCA panel. “That's where we get into issues of body‑shaming and body‑positivity, and Reginald, of course, just doesn't fit the mold…It's all about that conflict between what we think of as beauty and what we think of as sort of inner truths and the beauty inside us.”

“I think the foundation of our show is very rooted in real emotional dynamics,” executive producer Jeremiah Chechik added, saying that it deals with how we fit in and relate to others. “It's really about how, when you die, you can live better; you can become a better person, or not. Those are the real reversal of tropes that stand out.”
