SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Blu-ray Review: Snowpiercer: The Complete Second Season is Dark, Gritty, & Not to be Missed

***Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free blu-ray copy to review. Opinions are my own.***

SnowpiercerBased on the graphic novel series and film from Bong Joon Ho, Snowpiercer is set in the not-so-distant future after the world has been frozen over. What’s left of humanity is aboard the perpetually moving train that is over ten miles long and, originally, over one thousand cars.

At the end of the first season of the series, the train passengers became aware that the train was not being led by Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) as they had thought, but rather by Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), pretending to give orders as the man. There was a revolt, and the Tailies took over with Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) emerging as the leader of the merged classes.

However, when a rival train called Big Alice appears and attaches to the tail of Snowpiercer and it’s revealed that Mr. Wilford is, in fact, alive, Melanie risks going outside the train in the deadly weather to stop him from taking Snowpiercer. It’s also revealed to those on the train that Melanie’s daughter, Alex (Rowan Blanchard), who she thought dead, is Wilford’s protege.

Season two hits the ground running, as Melanie remains outside, unaware that her daughter is alive. Meanwhile, Wilford threatens to uncouple from Snowpiercer and leave everyone to die if his demands are not met. Now, essentially one train, with Big Alice having parts Snowpiercer needs, and Snowpiercer having fresh food needed by Big Alice’s crew, both sides will have to work together to stay alive, but neither Wilford nor Layton is willing to bend.

Exclusive Video Interview: Tatiana Maslany Talks Orphan Black: The Next Chapter

Tatiana MaslanyBBC America’s cult hit Orphan Black, which followed the intertwined lives of genetically identical human clones, all played by actress Tatiana Maslany, ended its original run in 2017. The story, however, continued in 2019 when the first season of an all-new audio series, Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, was realeased, with Maslany not only voicing all the clones, but narrating the entire story.

Realm Media recently released the premiere episode of season two, this time with the actress being joined by fellow actors Kristian Bruun, Evelyn Brochu, and Jordan Gavaris who reprised their original roles. The performers, who met up for a Zoom panel last Thursday, however, each did their parts on their own.

Although it’s a bit different using just her voice to play the clones in the book series and she’s acting by herself, according to Maslany, who recently talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive video interview, it still just relies on your imagination. “[It’s] a very creative space to play in,” said the actress, “even though it isn't necessarily back and forth, you're sort of generating your own thing.”

Maslany said that the character of Alison was the easiest to access after so long and that Sarah is “always kind of there,” but she also enjoys getting to play new clones. “[I]t was really fun to get to explore these new characters like Blythe and Vivi…it's fun to play these new roles and see kind of what new characterizations I can bring to them, or mannerisms, even if it's just vocal.”

Video Interview: Madeleine Madden & Zoë Robins Talk Wheel of Time, Now on Prime Video

The Wheel of TimeToday, one of the most popular epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, comes to Prime. Set in a world where only women are allowed to perform magic, Moraine (Rosamund Pike) of the powerful Aes Sedai travels to the small town of Two Rivers in search of the Dragon Reborn, who legend says will either save or destroy the world. There, she starts a dangerous journey with five candidates of the prophecy.

With the book series being so popular, fans, of course, have their own expectations of what the characters have been like. Madeleine Madden, who plays Egwene, one of the candidates, told SciFi Vision during a roundtable interview that regardless, the fan base has been a positive. “Of course, the series has a very passionate and loyal fan base,” said Madden, “which has really embraced us, and…we have used [it] multiple times as a wonderful resource to help us with our characters or with the story in general. Of course, people have expectations in their heads, and they're very loved characters, but, we, from my point of view, have been very embraced by the community. I think people are just very excited for this show to finally be made and to be on our screens so soon. So, it's been a real joy for us, and I know I can speak for all of the actors that have worked on this, have worked their butts off and given it their all. So, I think people will be really happy with [our] portrayal of these characters.”

Madden told journalists that Egwene is a privilege to play. “I got my my audition to play Egwene, and I had three scenes that were incredibly different. One showed her more softer romantic side, one showed her more eager, determined to learn side, and then one her really strong, steely side, and I just thought, ‘Wow, this is a really fleshed out character and a really strong woman that it would be an honor to play.’

Video Interview: Alex Vincent and Christine Elise Talk Chucky

ChuckyIn the new Syfy/USA series Chucky, the murderous doll turns up at a yard sale and wreaks havoc in Hackensack, New Jersey. While the series centers on new characters, several stars of the seven-film Child’s Play franchise are also in the cast. Among them are Alex Vincent and Christine Elise, who are slated to reprise their roles as Andy and Kyle. The pair Zoomed with journalists this week for a spoiler-free chat.

Vincent is excited about the series’ focus on teen protagonists. “I do think that the inclusion of the kids around that age, which is a new demographic, a new audience for us, is fantastic,” Vincent told SciFi Vision, “because these kids grew up with Chucky being something that their parents loved, and now it's something relevant to their time as well.”

Elise noted that the diverse and inclusive characters are also drawing new fans to the franchise. This time around, Chucky’s unfortunate owner is a gay teen dealing with a difficult family and a vicious school bully.

“A friend of mine…has twin boys that are in eighth grade, one of whom is gay,” she said. “…His mind is blown that we've got a gay kid as the lead in the show, and not as a sidekick or a tertiary character. Now he thinks I’m the coolest person on earth. It's speaking to kids that haven't felt spoken for, and I think that's a really important thing, and I think it's going to bring a big new demographic to us because of that.”

Video Interview: Carlton Cuse & Meredith Averill Talk Locke & Key Season 2 & Adapting for TV

Locke & KeyRecently Netflix released the second season of its series Locke & Key. In the second season, the Locke family are put to the test as demon Gabe (Griffin Gluck) seeks to forge his own keys and turn the whole town against them.

Being based on a comic series, the show runners of Locke & Key have had to decide what to pull from the source material and what to add and adapt. Showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill talked to SciFi Vision during a recent roundtable interview about their process. “It’s not a super didactic process,” said Cuse, “It’s a much more intuitive one. Meredith and I obviously have read the comics multiple times and have digested this rich and wonderful world that Joe [Hill] and Gabriel [Rodriguez] have created. Then, we are telling our story and we know that there are certain things that we both loved in the comic books, and we want to see those things at various points, but how and when that happens, it's kind of more organic how that unfolds…So, it's something that's organically evolved as we make the episodes and as we think about what we're going to do next.”

Both Cuse and Averill agreed that that process is a very collaborative one between the two of them and Hill and Rodriguez.

Cuse also told the site that he doesn’t feel that there was anything from the original story that they wanted to adapt that they had to leave out. “I don't think we feel like we missed anything. I think that certainly in season two and season three, the stuff that we really liked and responded to in the comics that fit in to the way our story was unfolding, we stuck it in there. The comics are their own thing and they're fantastic, but I think that we've utilized them [well] for our storytelling.”

Exclusive: The Walking Dead: World Beyond's Joe Holt & Natalie Gold Talk Trust, Betrayal, & More in 2.07

***The following interview contains spoilers for 2.07***

Joe Holt and Natalie GoldIn tonight’s all-new episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, after Felix (Nico Tortorella) stole a vial from the lab from Dr. Lyla Bellshaw, played by Natalie Gold, the base goes into lockdown as they try to find the culprit. Dr. Leo Bennett, played by Joe Holt, gets called into questioning by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), who, along with Huck (Annet Mahendru), interrogates him.

During the interrogation, when Jadis reveals to Leo that Lyla told the CRM about his daughters, Iris (Aliyah Royale) and Hope (Alexa Mansour), he finds out about more of the lies she’s been telling. Holt talked a bit about what Leo was feeling in that moment with Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview. “[J]ust being duped is one level.” said Holt. “It’s just embarrassing to be duped. Being duped by someone who you loved is a different level. And now that brings in a lot of hurt, because, was anything she said ever true? Did any of this mean anything, or was all of this just puppeteering?”

He added, however, that for Leo, what matters is the safety of his daughters. “As this is being revealed, it's this myriad of issues. Sure, there's the ego of being duped, but it's also, what does this mean for Hope and Iris? Does this mean they're in greater danger now?”

Exclusive: Aisha Tyler on Playing Fear the Walking Dead’s "Post-Apocalyptic Cowgirl," Mickey

***The following interview contains spoilers about 705***

Aisha TylerFear the Walking Dead
continued its run of fantastic guest stars this week with Aisha Tyler as Mickey, a tough survivor who meets Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Sherry (Christine Evangelista) on the road. Tyler (Archer, Criminal Minds) has directed episodes of Fear and The World Beyond, but this is the first time she has acted in the franchise.

In an exclusive interview, SciFi Vision asked Tyler, a TWD superfan, how she felt about being asked to play Mickey.

“It was really wonderful, she said. “It was incredibly flattering, first of all, and then the delight of getting a really extraordinary character, someone really special…[F]or me, this character was really one of a kind. The fact that they were willing to entrust me with her, with this character and with this extraordinary arc, was just a delight.”

As a character, Tyler told SciFi Vision, Mickey had it all. “She had all the stuff that the nerd in me was excited about and then all this other stuff that the actor in me was excited about.”

Exclusive: Fear the Walking Dead’s Evangelista on Strand, the Dark Horses, & More

***The following interview contains spoilers for 7.05***

Christine EvangelistaOn tonight’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, “Till Death,” Sherry (Christine Evangelista) and Dwight (Austin Amelio) are the latest survivors to visit Strand (Colman Domingo)’s tower. Like others before them, the couple are skeptical of Victor’s leadership. In an exclusive interview, SciFi Vision talked about the episode with Christine Evangelista, the actress who has played Sherry in the TWD franchise since 2015.

“I think Sherry comes into this highly sensitive and alert,” Evangelista explained, “given what happened to her in the past and how deeply affected she was by it…I think it's just this very visceral gut reaction to say that this is not right. This is not the person that we thought that we knew, and something's happening here and we have our guard up. Yes, it is this safe haven for these people, when the outside world is so deadly, but so was the Sanctuary.”

Strand wants Sherry and Dwight to track someone down, but when they catch up with Mickey (guest star Aisha Tyler), the Dark Horses have a change of heart.

Doctor Who: Flux - Once, Upon Time - 13.03 - Review

***The following review contains spoilers for 13.03, so please watching it before reading***

Doctor Who: FluxWhen we last left the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and company, Swarm (Sam Spruell) had replaced the faulty Mouri with Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Vinder (Jacob Anderson) to fix the time stream, but as humans they wouldn’t have survived time flowing through them. The Doctor, thinking fast, replaces another Mouri with herself, so she can absorb most of the time stream. She can’t contain it all, but she is at least, for the most part, able to hide Yaz and Vinder (and Dan [John Bishop]) within their own time streams. However, as the universe keeps shifting around them, they keep moving and some of their memories become corrupted. The Doctor must not only fix time and save her friends but try to attain her missing memories and figure out who created the Flux.

Tonight’s episode of Doctor Who, “Once, Upon Time,” had a lot of action and it never slowed down, however, it was to the detriment of the story. Like the premiere episode, so many different things were shoved into it that a lot of the episode did not make a lot of sense, and I still can’t break it all apart without a rewatch.
