Fringe 4.15 Review: "A Short Story About Love"

Coming on the heels of one of the most revelatory episodes of “Fringe” yet, this episode feels like a bit of a step down. That the central case for the episode wasn’t particularly involving didn’t help the matter, but there was also something lacking in the overall package, especially in how certain expository elements were handled. Even so, this are minor quibbles overall, and the episode continued the winning streak for this season of “Fringe”.

With just a few relatively minor apparent deviations from the historical record, “Spartacus: Vengeance” has managed to set up the climactic battle between Glaber’s Roman forces and Spartacus’ rebels with dramatic flair. I think it’s safe to say that anyone who complains about “lack of action” after this episode should have their head examined.

“Touch” debuted with fairly strong numbers, but with such a long gap between the “sneak preview” and the actual beginning of the series, I was curious to see how the show would fare in the ratings. This episode actually did very well, which suggests that a lot of people liked what they saw in the pilot enough to give the series another chance.

Renaissance woman Nicole Ritchie has a new job!
The fashion designer-actress-author-singer is a celebrity mentor on NBC’s new reality series Fashion Star. Each week, Nicole offers advice to 14 unknown designers as they pursue a serious prize: $6 million in orders from H&M, Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.
“Being a mentor is something that's new for me,” says Nicole, “but a role that I take very seriously. It was a wonderful experience doing it.”
“I find this show to be very inspirational. It's always such a great feeling to watch people's dreams come true. And if I can help them be a part of that then that's something that I was right away on board for.”
Nicole’s own mentor, she tells Scifi Vision, “Has been my father. Actually both of my parents have always been ones to encourage me to be myself and stay true to myself and not fall into what other people want me to do.”
“And it is important not to copy other people's careers,” she adds, “but set the tone of who you want to be. And my father's always encouraged me to do that.”
Nicole launched her two fashion lines, Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960, in 2009. What is the biggest lesson she’s learned? Be open to change.
“You have to be able to learn from your mistakes and grow and be open to criticism. And that is something that I talked to the designers about all through the season.”

"Grimm:" Bitsie Tullock - What's in store for Juliette?

After a brief hiatus, Grimm is back this week with a new episode featuring Portland’s sexiest Hexenbiest, Adalind. From NBC:
After the grisly murder of a familiar shop owner, Nick joins forces with Monroe to help solve the murder. When the shop owner’s sister, Rosalee (guest star Bree Turner), comes to town, Nick thinks he may have found a new ally in the creature world. Elsewhere, Captain Renard enlists Adalind to cast a spell on Hank. Meanwhile, Sgt. Wu unwittingly becomes entangled in Adalind’s dastardly plan.
What NBC doesn’t mention is what’s up with Juliette? In the last few episodes she discovered an engagement ring stashed in Nick’s sock drawer, then was abducted by a crazy Dämonfeuer. It was a bit too much for her to handle, and she told Nick so.
So where does that leave their relationship?

As this episode was running, I actually felt the slightest bit of sympathy for Quarles. Then I remembered that he is a low-down, sadistic psychopath who is probably even more dangerous now that he has nothing to lose. Boyd had made it his mission from the beginning to get rid of this interloper, and with the sneaky way in which he stole the sheriff's election out from under Quarles' clutches, his job was finally finished.

NBC's new reality competition, Fashion Star, searches for the next big name in the fashion industry. The series is hosted by executive producer Elle Macpherson, and also features celebrity mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie, and John Varvartos. Each week contestants will compete in a challenge to create designs and have them modeled on the runway for a fashion show. Representatives from America's largest retailers - Macy's, H&M, and Saks Fifth Avenue - will then bid to purchase and exclusively sell their favorites of the designs. At the end of each episode, the winning designs become immediately available for purchase online and in stores. The designers not chosen will be up for elimination. At the end of the competition, one designer will will a multi-million dollar prize to launch their collections in the three retailers.
Kara Laricks, a former fourth-grade school teacher designs androgynous clothing for women, inspired by and often reconstructed from menswear. She is also inspired by avant-garde Japanese designs.

Ringer 1.18 Review: "That Woman's Never Been a Victim Her Entire Life"

This episode was running efficiently for about a half hour, stumbled a bit, then recovered its footing somewhat at the end. Frankly, I think that's quite an accomplishment given the narrative maze that's been created and passes for an overall plot. That's the impression the show gets when this is the first fairly straightforward episode done in a long time.

As I've come to expect from "Merlin", the really big plot developments are always saved for the finale, which generally makes them the highlight of any season of the show. Unfortunately, this has the effect of making a lot of the episodes in between feel like filler. This year was a bit better than any previous one in that regard, but it still falls well below my expectations. Still, we're at the finale now, and it's hard not to appreciate it for basically being the kind of episode that we really should be seeing a lot more of on "Merlin".
