DVD Review: The Martian Extended Edition - Out Now

The MartianThe Martian, based on the #1 New York Times best-selling novel by Andy Weir, follows a team of astronauts on a reconnaissance mission to Mars, when suddenly things go wrong when a storm threatens the safety of the team and they are forced to evacuate.

On the way to the return spacecraft, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is struck by a satellite dish that gets caught up in the storm, and he is pulled away. Running out of time, with no communication or life signs coming from Watney, nor a way of finding his body, the crew is forced to evacuate without him, leaving him for dead.

Watney awakes to find himself stuck on Mars after the storm, injured, but well enough to operate on himself and eventually start planning on what his next step is for his survival.

Watney has no way to contact the team or Earth, and he knows that even if they do launch a rescue mission, it would take years. His best chance is to find a way to meet up with the next group that is scheduled on Mars. Regardless, he has to tackle his current predicament of not enough food, and currently nothing will grow on the planet.

DVD Review: The X-Files - The Event Series - Out Now

The X-Files - The Event SeriesFBI Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), the believer, and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), the skeptic, return to television for the first time in almost fourteen years in The X-Files six episode event series.

The pop culture phenomenon follows the agents as they continue to investigate cases of the unexplained.

Also returning are Mitch Pileggi as Assistant Director Walter Skinner, William B. Davis as Cigarette-Smoking Man, Annabeth Gish as Special Agent Monica Reyes, and Sheila Larken as Margaret Scully. There is also a very brief return by the Lone Gunmen: Dean Haglund, Tom Braidwood, and Bruce Harwood. Joel McHale also joins the cast as Tad O'Malley, as well as Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell as Agents Einstein and Kyd Miller.

Haven: The Final Season on Blu-ray & DVD Now

Haven: The Final SeasonThe fifth and final season of Haven was split into two parts. This review is the set for part two, which covers episodes 14-26. You can find the review of the first half of the season on Blu-ray here.

The back half of season five picks up after Mara is gone after Charlotte (Laura Mennell) put her and Audrey (both played by Emily Rose) back into one body. However, when Mara "died," it released Duke (Eric Balfour)'s curse, giving Troubles to even more people in the town. It gets even worse when a black shroud of smoke appears around the town, stopping anyone from getting in or out, except Duke, who takes off angry and full of guilt.

DVD Review: Get Your Game of Thrones Fix: Season 5 Blu-Ray

Game of ThronesGame of Thrones: The Complete Fifth Season is a great addition to your Blu-Ray collection, nicely packaged with solid bonus features that will please hardcore George R.R. Martin fans as well as viewers familiar only with the HBO series. The four-disc set includes all ten episodes of the season, which won a record twelve Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series.

Five years into the series, Game of Thrones’ complex storytelling defies quick synopsis. Throughout the season, Danaerys Targaryen struggles to lead Meereen and subdue the insurgent Sons of the Harpy, finally crossing paths with Tyrion Lannister. Meanwhile, Cersei Lannister also struggles to retain power in King’s Landing, but she underestimates the power of the High Sparrow. Littlefinger weds Sansa Stark to Ramsay Bolton, the worst sadist in all of Westeros, and Stannis’ devotion to the Lord of Light costs him everything. At the Wall, Jon Snow is elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and forms an alliance with the Wildlings, with disastrous results.

The Transporter RefueledThe Transporter Refueled, which is the fourth installment in the franchise, follows Frank Martin (Ed Skrein), who will transport anything on time if you follow his rules, for a price. When Martin receives a contract request from a woman to transport some packages, he gets more than he bargained for when he discovers the "packages" are two other women.

The women, who were part of a prostitution ring, not only want out, but are after revenge against their old boss. Martin gets sucked into their plans when the trio kidnaps his father (Ray Stevenson) to guarantee his help.

Fear the Walking DeadFear the Walking Dead, which premiered on AMC this summer, is a spin-off of the network's hit series The Walking Dead; however, you don't have to have seen the original to enjoy this series. Fear starts off as a sort of prequel, taking place during the time leading up to and during the early days of the apocalypse, though how the rest of the series will be paced in relation to the original series' time line remains unknown.

The series, set in Los Angeles, depicts what happens when the zombie apocalypse first breaks out, and how people react.

DVD Review: The Anomaly - An Ambitious Sci-Fi Gem - Out Now

The AnomalyToday the science fiction film The Anomaly comes to Blu-ray and DVD. Set in the future, the film stars and is directed by Noel Clarke, who plays Ryan Reeve, an ex-soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Ryan wakes up in a van next to a kidnapped boy (Art Parkinson). After helping the boy escape he is captured by Harkin Langham, played by Ian Somerhalder.

After blacking out, he wakes up again, ten days later, not knowing where he is, with no knowledge of what happened, though quickly finding out that he is missing five years of his life. What he does knows is that he is somehow connected to Langham and to the kidnapping. Worse of all, he discovers very quickly that he can only stay conscious nine minutes and forty seven seconds at a time, with days or sometimes weeks in between, as he fights to find the truth behind what has been done to him.

DVD Review: Haven: Season 5, Volume 1 - Out Now on Blu-ray & DVD

Haven: Season 5, Volume 1The fifth season of Haven picks up where it last left off: the portal has been closed, taking William (Colin Ferguson) with it. Audrey (Emily Rose) has been taken over by Mara, the original version of her, who is hell-bent on giving out new troubles and wreaking all kinds of havoc on the town.

Meanwhile, Duke (Eric Balfour) is dying after Mara re-activated the Cocker curse. He can still remove the troubles from a family line if he kills the troubled once again, but now, he also carries around all the troubles he and his family took from others. It only intensifies when they are unleashed on the town, creating bigger troubles than ever.

Nathan (Lucas Bryant) and the group struggle to accept their loss of Audrey, including all that entails dealing with helping the troubled, while still hoping to find a way to bring her back.

DVD Review: The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Season - Out Now on Blu-ray, DVD, & Digital HD

The Walking DeadSeason five of The Walking Dead follows Rick (Andrew Lincoln)'s group as they continue to fight for survival. The series picks up where last season left off: Beth (Emily Kinney) has been kidnapped, and the rest of the group, except Carol (Melissa McBride), Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman), and baby Judith, has been locked in the boxcar at Terminus, where they soon learn that Terminus is no sanctuary, but made up of murderous cannibals. Carol may be their only hope.

The first part of the season also introduces the character of Father Gabriel (Seth Gabriel) who joins the group on their journey.

The next part of the story focuses on Beth's rescue, during which the group splits as Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) agree to follow Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Eugene (Josh McDermitt), and Rosita (Christian Serratos) to D.C.

DVD Review: True Story - Out Now

True StoryTrue Story is a psychological thriller based on the real-life memoir of the same name by Michael Finkel. Jonah Hill stars at the lead character. A journalist for The New York Times, his career is as good as over when he embellishes and partly fabricates a story that's printed as the cover piece. After losing his job, no one will hire him.

Back at home with his wife Jill (Felicity Jones), Finkel gets an unexpected call from a reporter, asking for his opinion on a man, Christian Longo (James Franco), who murdered his family, and when arrested claimed to be Finkel. Unaware of what has transpired, Finkel is intrigued and sets up a meeting with Longo in prison.
