Exclusive: Jon Kroll on American Grit - Teamwork, Endurance & Poetic Justice

American Grit on FOXAt first glance, American Grit looks like a typical competition show with a military twist – there’s a series of challenges, a million dollars in prize money, and plenty of interpersonal drama along the way.  But American Grit takes its military inspiration seriously, which leads to some pretty great TV.

“We didn’t want to be like other shows where you have civilians in uniforms pretending to be soldiers,” said Executive Producer Jon Kroll in his exclusive interview with SciFi Vision. “We felt that would be disrespectful. We are military-themed but we don’t have drill sergeants screaming and people in uniforms.”

Instead, American Grit features four genuine U.S. military heroes (a Navy SEAL, an Army Ranger, a Marine gunnery sergeant and an Army sniper) guiding their teams of incredibly athletic civilians through physical challenges that emphasize military values – leadership, teamwork, and endurance.

“It was always the plan since season one. It’s the reason we introduced the Army of the 12 Monkeys, the way they are, and have their connection to time travel, their ambitions to use the machine, the witness seems to know the future, and there’s this thing, the Red Forest, and the house made of cedar and pine.

Exclusive: Todd Stashwick Returns to 12 Monkeys for Season 2

Todd StashwickNext week the popular time travel series 12 Monkeys returns to Syfy. At the end of last season, Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull) was sent by James Cole (Aaron Stanford) into the time machine, where she splintered into 2043. Things, however, were not as Cole left it, as Deacon of the West VII, played by Todd Stashwick, had joined with The Messengers, and they had fought their way into and taken over the temporal facility.

This season, Deacon's role at the facility takes a turn.

Stashwick recently sat down with Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision for an exclusive interview to talk about his work on season two of 12 Monkeys.

SCIFI VISION: I've watched the first eight episodes, and I have to say, I absolutely love this season.

TODD STASHWICK: We're proud of it. The funny thing is I'm a stupid science fiction comic book nerd and to be a part of a show that I would watch, even if I wasn't on it, is something of a 'pinch me' situation.

Harmon talked to SciFi Vision about what kind of album he sees himself making. “I sing blue-eyed soul. I talked it over with Mr. Scott, and he said Justin Timberlake is thinking about making a country album. So, define country in 2016. I think it could be whatever you want it to be, so we’re going to try to make an album that country supporters would pick up. Country supporters, they go to shows; they go to festivals; they buy CDs; they download stuff. If you can make it in country, you can have a career.”

This season, as they brought back a lot of contestants from the previous years of Idol, the contestants did not get to sing with a lot of icons outside of the show. The two singers first talked to SciFi Vision about who they would have liked to have sung with on stage if they had the chance.

According to Rapattoni, “I would’ve loved to do a song with Childish Gambino. That would’ve been dope.”

Renae had a hard time choosing. “I really don’t know because it would probably be someone from back in the day, one of those soulful singers.” She did, however, say that she would have liked to have sung with Carrie Underwood out of the past American Idol contestants.

Empire's Ilene Chaiken: Lucious' Backstory Has "Huge Consequences"

Empire showrunner Ilene ChaikenEmpire returns this week right where it left off last December - Camilla is back, Lucious is off the board, and Rhonda lies unconscious at the bottom of that big staircase. In anticipation of the spring premiere, showrunner Ilene Chaiken took some time to tease journalists about what we can expect in the back half of the season.

“The eight episodes that begin on March 30th are much more about the family,” she explained, and that means “far fewer” guest stars.  “The guest stars that are in those episodes are there to serve the stories and are driven by the stories. Every single person that appears on the show is on the show because we’re telling a story.”

On the other hand, fewer guests mean more screen time for Lucious! And while Chaiken maintains that she doesn’t have a favorite character, she admitted that “the story that I’m most excited about in the latter half of this season or the character whom I’ve most enjoyed is Lucious.

Having had devastating consequences in the past, they recruit grad student Kirsten Clark, who has temporal dysplasia, which means she doesn't perceive the passage of time and doesn't process emotions, which makes her the perfect candidate. When Kirsten is stitched, she is able to use the memories of the dead to help solve mysteries and murders.
