SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Miss USA Pageant with Giuliana Rancic and Andy Cohen

By Lynn Tackitt

Miss USA 2012When a lot of us were little girls, it was often a good night of television when you could sit down and watch The Miss USA Pageant. All the beautiful young ladies with graceful elegance in their evening gowns and their confidence as they walked the stage in their bathing suits, showing off different talents to show off a well rounded sophistication. It filled the evening with dreams of one day becoming one of the Miss USA winners. You got to meet them a little when the finalists answered questions on events of the world.

Looking back on that, I now realize how hard it must be to be a judge and pick a suitable winner in the short time that they get to evaluate the contestants - the importance of picking a young woman to take the title of Miss USA and do justice to the long line of pageant winners.

What was once thought of as just a beauty pageant has turned more and more to young women bringing attention to more important causes and making people aware of issues that should be brought to light.

Touch 1.12/1.13: "Gyre"

By John Keegan

touch_tv_show_icon"Touch" has always been a show with potential. It could have been something very interesting. Instead, it quickly became apparent that Tim Kring was using this show to promote a lazy brand of spiritualism that predicates itself on the human tendency to find patterns in the noise. All too often, the writers force connections to imply that there is a grander scheme of things, and it shows. This season finale is no different.

Mad Men 5.11 Review: "The Other Woman"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

mad_menIt's all glitz and glamour until someone brings something distasteful up to the surface. When that happens, it has a way of rotting whatever gets in the way. All throughout this episode, I felt as if the walls of Jericho were falling all around the characters. The firm is not flush with money so they have to fight tooth-and-nail for any account they can get their hands on. They do try, befitting what Don said in his speech to rally the troops in the previous episode, but there are costs to getting that golden goose.

Game of Thrones 2.9 Review: "Blackwater"

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright

Game_of_Thrones_icon"The episode has dramatically exceeded our expectations," said series showrunner David Benioff in an interview with Entertainment Weekly recently. Instead of going with their original plan to frame the entire Battle of the Blackwater from the perspective of Cersei and Sansa, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss made the case to HBO that they just HAD to show that battle, and they'd need more money to do it. Surprisingly, HBO agreed to raise the budget significantly. I knew all of this before the episode had aired, and I'd been unable to keep myself from watching the promo, but none of this prepared me for what I was about to experience. This was TV history in the making.

Awake 1.13 Review: "Turtles All the Way Down"

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

awakereviewiconThe final episode of Awake didn't answer the bulk of the questions I had coming into it, least of all which world depicted throughout the season was the "real" world, but the last section presents a neat open-ended befitting of the series. It gives rise to more questions that the series unfortunately will not have the chance to answer. What we got in these thirteen episodes that varied somewhat in quality was sometimes a meditation on what it's like to mourn the loss of a loved one and also a standard police procedural.

"Battleship": "Independence Day" with Boats

By Daniel Denehy

BattleshipBattleship has been receiving a lot of guff from critics since even before it was released. A natural reaction for them I think, given that the previews make it look like the fourth Transformers movie. A series that has polarized movie viewers like none other I've seen. (Since it is partially relevant, and if it's important to you, I enjoy that series. Are they flawless, no, but they are more than enjoyable action flicks.) However, though Battleship may look like Transformers, it is not; it's Independence Day, another big time movie critic punching bag that I enjoy.

American Idol Winner: Phillip Phillips

By Jamie Ruby

Phillip PhillipsIt was obvious from the beginning of the season of American Idol that Phillip Phillips had something special. The twenty-one year old from Leesburg, Georgia, had a unique voice that separated him from the competition and helped him stand out early on. Every week fans waited to see what he would do, as he always made the songs his own. Phillips has known from the beginning the kind of artist he would become; often ignoring advice in order to stay true to himself.

On Wednesday Phillips was crowned the winner of season eleven of American Idol.

On Thursday the singer talked to the digital media about his experiences on American Idol and the future.

American Idol: Jessica Sanchez

By Jamie Ruby:

Jessica SanchezJessica Sanchez has quite a big voice, but the California native is only sixteen. During this season of American Idol she has taken on songs by artists such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston - powerful songs that contestants are usually told to shy away from. However, this girl can sing a ballad like the best.

On Wednesday Sanchez placed second in the competition after the final vote.

On Thursday Sanchez talked to the digital media about her experiences on American Idol.

"Awake:" The Finale Will Blow Your Mind

By Jamie Ruby

AwakeNot since Lost has a show taken me on a journey that made me question the story at every turn. The complexity of Awake is one of the best parts of the show, in my opinion. Through the whole season I was guessing and making theories about what was really going on; which reality was real, if any. At the end of the journey I'm still left with questions, though surprisingly still quite satisfied at the end.
