SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Murphy & Richardsson Talk "Defiance" & How the Two Formats Interact

By Jamie Ruby

DefianceSyfy's new series Defiance premieres April 15, however the Trion game will be released tomorrow. The television series revolves around Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) and Irisa, an Irathient (Stephanie Leonidas), as they end up in the city of Defiance, where the Pale Wars were fought. In this near future, multiple alien races, called collectively the Votans, have come to Earth after their solar system was destroyed. The Votans and the humans attempt to live together harmoniously after they refused to continue to fight and lose innocent lives during the war. However, of course, life in Defiance is less then easy, as Nolan and Irisa will soon find out.

The game, by Trion Worlds, will feature some of the characters from the series. Some events will crossover between the two formats. In the game you can choose to play as a human or Irathient, with possibly more options coming later. The massive multiplayer online game will be different from others because of the way it ties into the show. It's quite a unique experience.

The executive producer and showrunner of the series, Kevin Murphy, along with Trion's VP of development, Nathan Richardsson, recently talked to the media about both the series and the game.

Devin Velez on His "American Idol" Journey, and the Future

By Jamie Ruby

Devin VelezLast week Devin Velez was the contestant voted off of Fox's American Idol. Velez, who hails from Chicago, recently talked to the media about his journey and what's to come.

Velez told the media that he received good advice from the judges and Jimmy Iovine during his time on Idol. "[The best advice was] from all of them, which is stay true to yourself. I think that I've been pretty consistent in doing that on the show. I was the same before the show, I was the same on the show, and I'm going to be the same after the show. Idol hasn't changed me. I have grown as a person, but I haven't changed who I am. I think that America fell in love with me for a reason, and I don't want to change, not just to let them down, but also not to let myself down. I think that you should be proud of who you are and the decisions that you've made as a person, and so I can say that I have no regrets on the show and if I could go back and change anything I wouldn't."

The singer was not surprised to be leaving the show, and is grateful for the experience. "Nothing of course was definite until the moment of, but even the night prior I was getting this feeling and I was like, "All right, now I think I'm going home." And I wasn't sad about it; I'm still not sad about it now, and it's weird because people are expecting me to be all mopey and crying, but my thing is, making top ten was winning for me, everything after that was falling action. It's a great accomplishment. Some of the contestants on the show that are still left, they've auditioned two or three times and this is my first time auditioning and I've made it this far. It's a great accomplishment and I'm so blessed to have made it this far."

Supernatural 8.18 Review: “Freaks and Geeks”

By John Keegan

supernatural_iconI suppose, after the previous episode, the Brothers Winchester deserved a bit of a break. I’m not sure how much of a break this actually is, or whether or not a callback to “Adventures in Babysitting” was really necessary, but there we are. And since the show has run a lot longer than anyone ever imagined it could, I suppose it’s time for the writers to address what it means for the Hunters to raise the next generation in the post-apocalyptic era.

Arrow 1.18 Review: “Salvation”

By John Keegan

arrow_iconRather quickly, the first season of Arrow is drawing towards its conclusion, and that means the pieces of the “undertaking” will be falling into place. Not only that, but a lot of chickens will be coming home to roost. Oliver gets a glimpse of what his example has wrought within The Glades, which leads him to a connection between the list and The Glades that he hadn’t quite put together yet.

The Good Wife 4.18 Review: “Death of a Client”

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

thegoodwife-iconThe experimentation into different case formats continues. Honestly, I think it would be a shock at this point to see the standard courtroom battles again. “Death of a Client” keeps its central focus on Alicia, which is where I believe the strength of the series lies. It’s framed around the “Shamrock Dinner”, mentioned in the previous episode, and all of the episode’s events spring forth from the apparently uber-important party. It gives the series an opportunity to address the political storyline that has lasted throughout this season.

Judge Nicki Minaj Dishes on "American Idol"

By Jamie Ruby

Nicki MinajFox's American Idol is currently midway through its twelfth season. This time the competition has new judges in addition to veteran judge Randy Jackson. One of these new judges is singing sensation Nicki Minaj, who recently talked to the digital media about her time so far on Idol.

Minaj admits to being nervous at the beginning. "I didn't know what to expect going in to the show. I was so nervous. I had a lot of anxiety. I felt like, "Okay. I know everybody's just going to hate me. Oh well." There were moments in the audition process that I would say to the producers, "I can't do this anymore because if everyone is going to give good critic and I'm going to be the only one being honest then America is going to hate me. I'm going to be seen as mean." And the producers said, "Nicki, trust me America is going to appreciate the honesty" and that's all I had to go on.

"I had Mike Darnell, Trish and Nigel telling me that, you know, take their word and that's what I did. I took their word, and I came in every day and I was myself. What people see me doing with the constants is exactly what I do with my fans. Well, I don't critic my fans, but I definitely play with my fans and speak to my fans as if they're my friends, and that's why I started giving the contestants nicknames.

"When I'm laughing on the show I'm genuinely laughing. I can't come up there and pretend. I just can't do it. I can't be someone I'm not. I can't sit there with a phony smile on my face; I can't do it. I'm happy that people are responding well to it. I mean if I'm polarizing I'm polarizing. I don't know, but I definitely didn't have a preconceived notion of who I was going to be on that panel."

Lost Girl 3.10 Review: “Delinquents”

By John Keegan

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumbAfter the disappointing and anticlimactic resolution of the “dawning” ceremony, it makes sense that the writers would want to take a step back, return to the “fae of the week” roots a bit, and use character interactions and relationships to explore the changes in Bo and those around her. Some of that does take place, but it still seems far less than one could reasonably expect. After stealing her friends’ energy without their consent, shouldn’t Bo be on a shorter leash?

Being Human US 3.11 Review: “If I Only Had Raw Brain”

By John Keegan

Being-Human-icon-being-human-us-17425916-150-150It’s pretty clear that the season is building to a big finale, and this episode is setting up a lot of the pins that will be knocked down along the way. As usual, no matter how good things seem to be getting for the cast of Being Human, there’s always another hammer ready to fall. And right now, we can see it coming, and the anticipation is almost worse than the actual blow.

Paul Jolley Talks "Idol," Modeling, and More

By Jamie Ruby

Paul JolleyThe latest contestant voted off of American Idol was Tennessee native Paul Jolley, who has described his style as a blend of country and pop. He recently talked to the digial media about his journey on Idol, as well as his plans for the future.

Jolley told SciFi Vision that his plans for his music haven't changed. "I still want to stick with the country/pop lane. I don't want to change what I feel in my heart that my calling is and what I need to be doing."

He also talked about auditioning for the show. "I had auditioned for American Idol a few times before and I never made it past the cattle call. I got to the point where I was like, well, maybe this TV show is just not for me and I was okay with it. Then this year I opened up for an artist named Billy Dean and—an amazing guy by the way—and so I was home the next week and one of the ladies that got me to do the show called me up and she said, American Idol is coming here next week, but it's not released. We want you to come and represent our town and come audition. I said, I'm off work that day, it works out, I'll be there.

"At that time, I didn't even know Keith Urban was going to be a judge and he's always been my idol ever since I was a little kid. It's funny how things just always play out in the favor of if you want something to happen and you believe enough that things will happen."
