Being Human US 3.12 Review: “Always a Bridesmaid, Never Alive”

By John Keegan

Being-Human-icon-being-human-us-17425916-150-150With so much to cover towards the end of the season, it makes sense that Sally’s rather pressing situation would dominate the penultimate hour. What’s better is that it’s only a partial resolution; Sally gets something of a victory, but as it should be, there are consequences. The duration is always longer than the war, and Sally has all too much experience with unwanted guests.

The Walking Dead 3.16 Review: “Welcome to the Tombs”

By John Keegan

The-Walking-Dead-iconThe Walking Dead is often a victim of its own source material. I mean that in the sense that fans of the ongoing comic book series want to see the characters and situations from that source material put onto the screen as faithfully as possible. Newer fans want a show that hits a lot of the same high notes, without the danger of being spoiled. And the writers want the freedom to pick and choose, while still telling their own story in familiar ground.

Hugh Dancy & Bryan Fuller Whet Your Appetite for "Hannibal"

By Jamie Ruby

Hugh Dancy and Bryan FullerNBC's new series Hannibal premieres tomorrow night. The story follows Hannibal Lector (Mads Mikkelsen) in his early years, when he was known as a brilliant psychiatrist working for the FBI. He works to help criminal profiler Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy, as he often steps too far into the minds of serial killers, not knowing he is working with one.

In preparation for the premiere, executive producer and writer, Bryan Fuller, and star, Hugh Dancy, talked to the digital media about what's to come on the series.

Fuller talked to SciFi Vision about their approach to taking the series beyond a crime procedural. "Our approach was, how can we tell a slightly more heightened quality of serial killer tale each week to honor the style and the genre that Thomas Harris has really kind of created in and of himself, which you look at Francis Dolarhyde in Red Dragon who is a man who is looking to evolve outside of like the simplicity of his life that was corrupted by various abuses to a God-like being that existed inside of him.

"Or, Buffalo Bill who was a man who was looking to transform into a woman and the horrible deeds that he did to craft the human suit out of real live females.

"There is a sort of purple operatic quality to those style of murders that we tried to respect and kind of give more than a crime procedural that is so completely grounded in reality and actually...gives you something a little more grand than what you would see on other crime procedural shows."

Game of Thrones 3.1 Review: “Valar Dohaeris”

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright

Game_of_Thrones_iconGame of Thrones has a lot of characters; a whole lot of characters. As a consequence, there are even some characters who remain invisible in this season opener. It’s no wonder the episodes are set to each be a tiny bit longer this year than the last. I don’t envy the job of condensing everything in the books down to television size, but so far, the writers seem to be pulling it off. As far as I can tell the reception from TV fans and book fans seems as positive as ever. I don’t think that’s likely to change anytime soon.

The Good Wife 4.19 Review: “The Wheels of Justice”

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

thegoodwife-iconExonerated (but secretly guilty) killer Colin Sweeney returns to wreak creepy havoc on this show. He’s just a little more interesting than the show’s other long-term client, Lemond Bishop, but it can only go so far. The guy oozes creep, if that’s somehow possible from a person, and seems to delight in getting away with whatever he can. So yes, once again, the outcome of the Case of the Week is going to favor Lockhart-Gardner. It has occurred in nearly every episode so I really shouldn’t harp on it, but it does rob whatever tension the episode has in its favor.

Grimm 2.16 Review: “Nameless”

By John Keegan

Grimm-2Whenever I see any kind of mainstream show, even a genre one, take on gamer culture in any significant way, especially MMORPGs, I get nervous. Even shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation couldn’t seem to wrap their brains around the notion that gamers aren’t just young, slovenly wrecks living in their parents’ basement. A lot of gamers these days are the folks sitting in the office. Most of the population under the age of 45 grew up with some kind of video gaming as a perfectly normal part of life.

The Vampire Diaries 4.18 Review: “American Gothic”

By John Keegan

vampire-diaries-iconWith the backdoor pilot for The Originals coming quite soon, I suppose it was time to set up the impending visit to New Orleans. I figured that’s where the various folks seeking out the cure would end up looking for Katherine, but instead, Elena finds her in the middle of a small town, where she has set herself up rather well as the semi-invisible mistress. And she’s not alone.
