SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Patty Duke Guest Stars on "Drop Dead Diva"

By Jamie Ruby

Patty DukeThe comedic drama Drop Dead Diva centers around a wannabe model who died in an accident and woke up in the body of a plus-size attorney named Jane (Brook Elliott).

Recently the legendary Patty Duke guest starred on the series as Rita O'Riley, a floor-greeter at the store OneStop. She was fired after she tackled and stopped a shoplifter in the store. Things are not what they seem, however, when they realize that Rita has taken on the personality of her deceased sister.

Patty Duke is an accomplished actress, known for her work in projects such as The Miracle Worker, The Patty Duke Show, and Valley of the Dolls. She will also appear in the upcoming film Amazing Love, alongside her son, Sean Astin.

I recently was lucky enough to take part in a conference call with Ms. Duke, and I was able to ask her quite a few questions.

Elijah Wood Returns to "Wilfred" Tonight on FX

By Jamie Ruby

Elijah WoodWilfred returns to FX tonight with a special preview episode of the series, "Progress." Wilfred, which was adapted for FX by David Zuckerman, centers around the character of Ryan, played by Elijah Wood. On the verge of attempted suicide, Ryan struggles to find happiness in his life, until he meets "Wilfred." Everyone sees Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a dog; however, Ryan sees him as a man in a dog suit. Wilfred is actually Ryan's alter-ego and way of coping to "break out of his shell."

Most fans will know Wood from his role of Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy or as Mumble in Happy Feet, but the actor has a long list of credits to his name. Wood will also be reprising the role of Frodo in the upcoming film The Hobbit.

I recently got a chance to talk to Wood in an interview with the media.

"Hell on Wheels" - Season 1 DVD/Blu-Ray Review

By Jamie Ruby

Hell on WheelsAMC's Hell on Wheels takes place in the traveling town of Hell on Wheels after the Civil War, during the Union Pacific's construction of the first transcontinental railroad. The show follows former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, who is out for revenge to find the Union soldier who killed his wife.

The series does a great job of chronicling the way of life after the civil war. It feels true to life and does not shy away from atrocities like the treatment of the newly emancipated African-Americans, or the whore houses and the way women in general were treated at the time, or the brutality of the Indians and what our nation took from them. It really pulls you into the time period and makes you feel like you have been transported there.

It's easy to see that a lot of research was done and care was taken to get the gritty look of the show, from the fully constructed town to the blood and dirt caked wardrobe. If you like historical features, that is one thing the series brings to the table in spades. Hell on Wheels tries to stay true to the events and conditions of the time. The scale of everything feels like a mini movie from week to week.

Lectures, Homework, & Ghosts: "School Spirits" Comes to Syfy

By Christiane Elin

School SpiritsSyfy introduces a new paranormal show, School Spirits, from the executive producers of Celebrity Ghost Stories with Survivor's executive producer, Mark Burnett. The six-episode series focuses on ghost stories from schools and universities. This season the show visits the University of Michigan; SUNY Geneseo in upstate New York; Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA; Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, VA; Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA; and Eastern Kentucky University.

SciFi Vision had the chance to speak with School Spirits executive producers Seth Jarrett & Julie Isogna Jarrett via press conference call. School Spirits relies heavily on first person accounts. The producers found it important to find the best voices for the show. Alumni, faculty, and historians help to substantiate the ghost stories. Executive Producer, Seth Jarrett said, "Some of the voices of the show are people who don't actually want to be found. They're the people who have had, really scary, in some cases life-changing experiences."

The stories featured on School Spirits have a commonality between many of the haunting experiences. Executive Producer, Seth Jarrett comments that, "All of the experiences seem to be connected to some type of tragedy that took place, to people who passed on earlier than they should or in a certain unexpected or violent way."

Tune into School Spirits starting on Wednesday, June 20th on Syfy to see if more goes on at school than just studying.

Lost Girl 2.9 Review: "Original Skin"

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumb"Original Skin" is easily the best episode of the show to date. Previous episodes have managed to blend the fun fantastical tone of the Fae world, the strong characterisation that's set "Lost Girl" above a lot of other supernatural dramas, and the big story arc developments that get audiences jazzed about what comes next. But nothing previous has ever quite pulled it all together in such a fantastic balance to create the most thoroughly watchable instalment of the show yet.

The Borgias 2.10 Review: "The Confession"

By John Keegan

borgias_iconOne of the greatest difficulties in setting up a season arc is avoiding the sense of predictability. It's one thing when a plot element is the result of a logical, organic progression of events; this renders the anticipated conclusion more palatable as a result. When the plot thread seemed forced or too convenient, however, it can detract from the whole.

True Blood 5.2: "Authority Always Wins"

By John Keegan

true_blood_iconThe fifth season premiere left me more than a little concerned about the inability of the writing staff to focus. In what has become a familiar refrain for "True Blood" fans, there just seems to be too many irrelevant subplots taking up time that would be better spent with the main characters. Considering how strong the material with the Authority was, and the depth of mythology that it suggested, why stray into ridiculously mundane, mind-numbing material, if one doesn't have to do so?
