SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Supernatural 8.19 Review: “Taxi Driver”

By John Keegan

supernatural_iconI’ll start with the obvious: yes, I realized who the writers were for the episode pretty early. And yes, I think some of their usual flaws crept into the script, particularly the awkward dialogue that didn’t quite ring true here and there. But surprisingly, I found this to be one of their best efforts, and a strong episode for the season as a whole.

"The Americans:" Stan Pulls the Trigger

By Karen Moul

Noah Emmerich on FX's  Last night’s episode of The Americans was a big one for FBI agent Stan Beeman. The agency wanted payback for the Russian attack on the scientists, and Stan was adamant that he would not participate in an extrajudicial killing. But once his partner turned up his dead Stan didn’t just participate, he pulled the trigger.

Actor Noah Emmerich gave us some insight into his character’s state of mind.

“I think he sees it as a justifiable and promised retaliation for the murder on American soil of a federal agent,” he explained. “I think it would be more dangerous, from Stan’s point of view, to do nothing, to not retaliate, to therefore give the KGB a green light in saying you can indiscriminately execute American citizens on American soil.”

“I don’t think there’s any pleasure in it at all,” Emmerich continued. “I think it is revenge. I don’t think it’s personal, though, I think it’s political.

“It’s a Cold War, and he’s made it clear, he’s drawn a line that unless Amador is returned in health to his job there will repercussions, and if you don’t follow through with that threat then you lose all credibility in the future. So in some way I think that’s in fact what drives Stan to do that.”

Exclusive: Nico Tortorella - Playing a Killer on "The Following"

Exclusive Interview with Nico Tortorella for The Following
Interview by Jamie Ruby
Written Jamie Ruby

Nico TortorellaThe Fox drama The Following revolves around Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) and his devoted cult followers, as well as Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), who works with the FBI to try to catch Carroll, who has escaped from prison for the second time, and is now living in a house with his kidnapped ex-wife, Claire (Natalie Zea), and son (Kyle Catlett), as well as his followers, who are generally sociopaths and killers.

One of these followers is Jacob Wells, who up until recently had never killed anyone. Jacob was recently betrayed by Emma (Valorie Curry), who left him with a dying Paul (Adan Canto; the three were lovers). After Paul begged him, Jacob suffocated him. That action, as well as Emma's betrayal, has changed him.

The actor, who plays Jacob, Nico Tortorella, recently sat down in an exclusive interview with Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision.

When he first read the script, Tortorella was thought to be too young for the role. "It was the first script I read for pilot season last year, and originally they thought that I was going to be too young for the role, but as my team does, they pushed hard, and I got in the room and was testing the next day, and chemistry reading with Paul the day after."

Arrow 1.19 Review: “Unfinished Business”

By John Keegan

arrow_iconThe past few episodes have focused on circumstances that will force Oliver to reconsider his tactics, but it’s not going to be a short road from his current vigilante style to something more heroic. While the previous two episodes were all about how easily one can step over the line, this scenario introduced a situation where being merciful can have unexpected consequences.

Lost Girl 3.11 Review: “Adventures in Fae-bysitting”

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumbThere’s almost a comforting familiarity about the old Lost Girl formula, in that structure that worked pretty consistently during the first season and, despite some problems, helped the show grow and develop and latch onto its initial fanbase. Even Bo and Kenzi seem to think so in this episode as they gleefully take the opportunity to tackle an old-school case, and like most of the strongest Lost Girl episodes, it’s a pleasant-enough diversion that allows the really interesting plot elements to bubble up.

Revolution 1.12 Review: “Ghosts”

By John Keegan and J.M. Graham

RevolutionIconRevolution has been weakened by its inability to create convincing central conflict. The search for Danny was simply boring, because Danny was never anything more than a plot point. While there have been many other issues with the show (namely the absolutely insipid writing, both for plot and characters), a strong central conflict could very easily have made everything much more palatable. A prime example was the preceding episode: while there was a great deal of manufactured tension, bad military tactics, and an obviously staged death, the conflict between the rebels and the Monroe Republic has simply not lived up to its standard. This episode takes a step forward, if only a tentative one that is hindered by the now-standard quality issues.

Being Human US 3.12 Review: “Always a Bridesmaid, Never Alive”

By John Keegan

Being-Human-icon-being-human-us-17425916-150-150With so much to cover towards the end of the season, it makes sense that Sally’s rather pressing situation would dominate the penultimate hour. What’s better is that it’s only a partial resolution; Sally gets something of a victory, but as it should be, there are consequences. The duration is always longer than the war, and Sally has all too much experience with unwanted guests.

The Walking Dead 3.16 Review: “Welcome to the Tombs”

By John Keegan

The-Walking-Dead-iconThe Walking Dead is often a victim of its own source material. I mean that in the sense that fans of the ongoing comic book series want to see the characters and situations from that source material put onto the screen as faithfully as possible. Newer fans want a show that hits a lot of the same high notes, without the danger of being spoiled. And the writers want the freedom to pick and choose, while still telling their own story in familiar ground.
