SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Lost Girl 2.12: "Masks"

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumbNot for the first time, an episode of "Lost Girl" has a thin, forgettable A-story and builds much more interesting character beats and arcs around it -- but unfortunately, this episode's A-story was following up on the Lauren and Lachlan beats of the previous episode and the cliffhanger that seemed, at the time, to promise a dramatic turn of events for all characters involved.

True Blood 5.5 Review: "Let's Boot and Rally"

By John Keegan

true_blood_iconDespite all the promises by the producers and writers that this season would get things back on track, the series continues to be hobbled by a lack of focus and a crippling number of unrelated, mind-numbing subplots. The best thing that could happen to this show is a massive killing spree, and not the kind that gets resolved with characters being turned at the last possible minute.

Lost Girl 2.11 Review: "Can't See the Fae-rest"

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

Lost-Girl-Season-2-thumbHow does one describe an episode as "average" without coming across as negative or insulting? Because that's what "Can't See the Fae-rest" feels like: an episode that hits that great "Lost Girl" baseline, that nice groove that season one slipped into so easily and season two has been having trouble finding. It's not perfect, but it lacks big gaping flaws and nothing feels particularly out of place. By the end, the audience is ready for more and looking forward to where the show will go next.

LeVar Burton: From "Reading Rainbow"' to "Perception"

By Karen Moul

LeVar BurtonWhen the new drama Perception debuts on TNT next week, fans will recognize a number of familiar faces including Eric McCormack (Will & Grace), Rachael Leigh Cook (Psych), and Kelly Rowan (The OC).

But perhaps the most anticipated performance is that of LeVar Burton, who returns to episodic television after a lengthy absence. Burton is best known to younger audiences for his dual roles as Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation and as host/executive producer of the award winning PBS series Reading Rainbow.

Perception
is a police procedural that centers on Dr. David Pierce (McCormack), a professor of neuroscience and a paranoid schizophrenic who assists the FBI with difficult cases. Burton plays Paul Haley, dean of the university where Pierce works.

In a phone conversation, Burton explained that he had worked with series creator Ken Biller on Star Trek: Voyager, and what drew him to Perception, he said, was not the character Biller created so much as the quality of the writing.

"Decoy Bride" - DVD/Blu-Ray Review

By Jamie Ruby

Decoy BrideKatie (Kelly MacDonald), the only single woman left on the small Scottish island of Hegg, lives a boring life with her sick mother. All that changes when the island is visited by famous movie star Lara Tyler (Alice Eve) and British author James Arber (David Tennant), as they come to the remote location after their first wedding attempt was botched by the paparazzi. The island was chosen because James previously described the castle where they would be married and the island in his novel - in gross exaggeration. Lara's assistants work feverishly to transform an entire castle to be perfect for the bride, as well as take precautions to keep the press at bay.

When it's apparent that the press cannot be so easily swayed, the assistants decide to find a decoy bride.

True Blood 5.4 Review: "We'll Meet Again"

By John Keegan

true_blood_iconAfter appearing to bring some sense of cohesion to the season arc in the previous episode, the writers slip back into the quagmire of scattershot plotting for this installment. I struggled to find even the semblance of a direction in this episode, despite the fact that all of the various plot threads do advance to some degree. That lack of direction made it very hard to internalize the events that took place, because the importance of them was often too ephemeral.
